The association between lumbar lordosis preoperatively and changes in PROMs for lumbar spinal stenosis patients 2 years after spinal surgery: radiological and clinical results from the NORDSTEN-spinal stenosis trial.
Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) sometimes have lower lumbar lordosis (LL), and the incidence of LSS correlates closely with the loss of LL. The few studies that have evaluated the association between LL and clinical outcomes after non-instrumented surgery for LSS show conflicting results. This study investigates the association between preoperative LL and changes in PROMs 2 years after decompressive surgery. ⋯ LL before surgery was not associated with changes in PROMs 2 years after surgery. Lumbar lordosis should not be a factor when considering decompressive surgery for LSS.

Spinal phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors: a rare etiology causing tumor-induced osteomalacia-a review of experience at a UK tertiary referral center and literature review.
This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the management challenges associated with Spinal Phosphaturic Mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) and evaluates the surgical management outcomes for this rare entity linked to Tumor-induced osteolysis. The primary objective of this study is to enhance the familiarity of treating physicians with the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment options for Spinal PMTs. ⋯ Spinal PMTs play a significant role in Tumor-induced osteolysis, warranting timely and accurate diagnosis. Although diagnosing Spinal PMTs presents challenges, surgical management has proven to yield favorable outcomes, effectively alleviating symptoms and restoring phosphate levels. A multidisciplinary approach and continued vigilance are essential in ensuring early diagnosis, effective treatment, and long-term monitoring for patients affected by spinal PMTs.

Open heart surgery is the most common treatment for congenital heart disease. Thoracotomy, sternotomy, or a combination of both are the main approaches used in open heart surgeries. In cardiac surgery, there have been concerns that these surgeries increase the likelihood of spinal deformities. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis provided updated evidence on the prevalence of spinal deformities following congenital heart surgery. ⋯ This review suggests that the prevalence of spinal deformities was high among patients who underwent sternotomy or thoracotomy.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of sarcopenia and lumbar paraspinal muscle composition (PMC) on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after lumbar fusion surgery with 12-month follow-up (12 M-FU). ⋯ Preoperative FI of the psoas and the PPM are associated with worse ODI outcomes one year after lumbar fusion. Sarcopenia is associated with worse ODI, PCS-12 and NRS-L in females, but not males. Considering sex differences, PMI and FI of the PPM might be used to counsel patients on their expectations for health-related quality of life after lumbar fusion.

Several recent studies have reported a possible association between gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration; however, no studies have shown a causal relationship between gut microbiota and disc degeneration. This study was dedicated to investigate the causal relationship between the gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration and the presence of potentially bacterial traits using two-sample Mendelian randomization. ⋯ This Mendelian Randomization study found a causal effect between 10 gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration, and we summarize the possible mechanisms of action in the context of existing studies. However, additional research is essential to fully understand the contribution of genetic factors to the dynamics of gut microbiota and its impact on disc degeneration.
