Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is an evidence-based multimodal perioperative management strategy. The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinical efficacy of ERAS in elderly patients (> 70 years old) undergoing multi-level posterior lumbar or thoracolumbar instrumented fusion for degenerative diseases. ⋯ In conclusion, the present study reported the first ERAS principles performed in multi-level lumbar or thoracolumbar instrumented fusion for degenerative conditions. Our outcomes shown that the implementation of ERAS in these populations is favorable for reducing LOS and decreasing overall number of complications though the comparable complication rates between two groups. Totally, our ERAS protocols were safe and feasible in these populations.

To describe the clinical outcomes beyond pain relief of high-frequency spinal cord stimulation at 10 kHz (10 kHz SCS) in a patient with cervical myelopathy and drug-resistant chronic neuropathic pain with spastic tetraparesis. ⋯ To our knowledge, recovery from spasms and motor improvement in a spastic tetraparesis patient has never been reported before with 10 kHz SCS and possibly this new stimulation paradigm may overcome some performance limitations of traditional low-frequency SCS (LF-SCS). Treatment eliminated spasms at the lower limbs but not at the upper ones, thus suggesting that the location of the epidural leads could affect outcomes.

In patients with degenerative lumbar diseases, we aimed to establish the cutoff value of Hounsfield units (HU) for osteoporosis screening on the basis of the relationship between computed tomography (CT) HU value and volume bone mineral density (BMD) measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT). ⋯ The CT value is effective in osteoporosis screening, and the QCT-based cutoff value is 110 HU for osteoporosis and 160 HU for osteopenia in the patients with degenerative lumbar disease.

Epidemiology of pediatric spinal trauma with neurological deficits in Catalonia: a 36-year experience.
Existing literature on pediatric traumatic spinal cord injury (PTSCI) demonstrates large variations in characteristics, incidence, time-periods and etiology, worldwide. Epidemiological studies addressing injuries to the total spine, conducted in Southern European regions are remarkably scarce; therefore we aimed to investigate long-term trends analyzing etiology, fracture location and type, single or multiple fractures, associated lesions and neurological status in Catalonia, Spain. ⋯ IV.
