Epidemiology of pediatric spinal trauma with neurological deficits in Catalonia: a 36-year experience.
Existing literature on pediatric traumatic spinal cord injury (PTSCI) demonstrates large variations in characteristics, incidence, time-periods and etiology, worldwide. Epidemiological studies addressing injuries to the total spine, conducted in Southern European regions are remarkably scarce; therefore we aimed to investigate long-term trends analyzing etiology, fracture location and type, single or multiple fractures, associated lesions and neurological status in Catalonia, Spain. ⋯ IV.

Since scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity, it causes some movement limitations in the spine and related joints. However, functional limitations associated with scoliosis-related hip joint involvement are the subject of research. ⋯ Individuals with IS show decreased hip mobility, lumbopelvic stability, hip joint position sense, and balance compared to healthy peers; however, these limitations do not have a clinical impact on daily living activities.

To evaluate the influence of vertebral and disc wedging on the contribution of lumbar lordosis and the change of disc thickness before and after walking based on MRI. ⋯ Age and walking activity are the influencing factors of lumbar lordosis and disc thickening. Walking activity can significantly increase lumbar lordosis, and age is the main factor promoting lumbar disc thickening. DHL4-5 was the thickest lumbar intervertebral disc with the fastest intergroup thickening. Disc wedging contributes more to lumbar lordosis than vertebral wedging.

To investigate the impact of preoperative compensatory curve on the postoperative curve progression in congenital scoliosis (CS) patients following thoracolumbar hemivertebra (HV) resection and short fusion. ⋯ The presence of the compensatory curve was associated with a higher incidence of postoperative curve progression in patients with CS who underwent thoracolumbar HV resection and short fusion. Shorter fusion segments and greater postoperative UIV tilt were found to be the risk factors for postoperative curve progression.

To classify sagittal spinopelvic alignment patterns of non-ambulatory scoliosis patients with paraplegia based on lateral sitting radiographs and explore their relation to clinical background and physical function. ⋯ Identified were two distinct sagittal alignment patterns in seated scoliosis patients with paraplegia, with potential influences from spasticity in the lower extremities. Recognizing these patterns can aid in assessing the function of sitting balance that includes the hip joint and in optimizing strategies for the treatment of scoliosis patients with paraplegia.
