Elucidate whether it is preferable to use the reference frame (RF) middle attachment (RFMA) method over the edge of the planned pedicle screw (PS) insertion area for RF placement in the surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with intraoperative computed tomography (CT) navigation. ⋯ The RFMA method in thoracic scoliosis surgery for AIS with intraoperative CT navigation could significantly decrease the number of CT scans and blood loss while maintaining a comparable PS perforation rate to RF placement at the distal end of the planned PS insertion range.

To summarize the mechanical loading of the spine in different activities of daily living and sports. ⋯ These results may help to identify acute and long-term risks of low back pain and, thus, may guide the development of preventive interventions for low back pain or injury in athletes.

To determine: (1) the smallest change in function patients would need to see following a self-management intervention for low back pain (LBP) to consider it worthwhile; (2) the association between patient-related factors and the magnitude of the smallest worthwhile change. ⋯ On average, an improvement of 9.4 points (or 31%) in function is considered by people with LBP as the smallest change that makes self-management worthwhile. Those with lower levels of function needed to experience greater improvements.

Back pain is a growing problem worldwide, not only in adults but also in children. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to investigate and understand the factors that influence the early onset of back pain. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of back pain in children and adolescents and to identify predisposing risk factors and protective factors. ⋯ The prevalence of back pain in children and adolescents is very high: The study enhances the case for protective factors such as physical activity habits or video games while reinforcing risk factors such as percent body fat, prolonged smartphone or computer use, and posture.

To develop and test synthetic vertebral stabilization techniques ("vertebropexy") that can be used after decompression surgery and furthermore to compare them with a standard dorsal fusion procedure. ⋯ Synthetic vertebropexy is able to reduce lumbar segmental motion, especially in flexion-extension. The spinolaminar technique affects shear forces to a greater extent than the interspinous technique.
