Relationships between patient-related attitudinal barriers, analgesic adherence and pain relief in Chinese cancer inpatients.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient-related attitudinal barriers and identify associated factors in Chinese cancer inpatients receiving opioids and to explore relationships between patient-related attitudinal barriers, analgesic adherence and pain relief. ⋯ The findings of this study support unsatisfactory pain management and moderate analgesic adherence for Chinese inpatients. It is suggested that patient-related attitudinal barriers do not play an undermining role in pain management by negatively affecting patients' analgesic adherence. Conversely, patients' beliefs are more likely to be shaped by under treatment rather than as a cause.

Effect of palonosetron and dexamethasone administration on the prevention of gastrointestinal symptoms in hepatic arterial chemoembolization with epirubicin.
There are several studies on premedication to prevent postembolization syndromes which occurs after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), but the medication to be used is still not established. This study aimed to examine the effect of palonosetron and dexamethasone on the prevention of gastrointestinal symptoms induced by TACE. ⋯ Premedication of palonosetron and dexamethasone significantly prevents the incidence and reduces the severity of gastrointestinal symptoms especially in the acute phase. Further studies will be needed to determine the most recommended 5-HT3 antagonist or dosage of dexamethasone in establishing the optimal antiemetic regimen.

Multicenter StudyAssociation between alcoholism and symptom expression, patient symptom goals, and clinical response in advanced cancer patients.
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of alcoholism on symptom expression, personalized symptom goal (PSG) and patient goal response (PGR), and patient global impression (PGI) in advanced cancer patients. ⋯ CAGE-positive advanced cancer patients favorably responded to a palliative care intervention. No greater differences have been found in comparison with CAGE-negative patients for PSG, PGR, and PGI, except for appetite. Further studies with large number of patients could confirm some trends observed in this study.

Review"Triggers" for early palliative care referral in patients with cancer: a review of urgent unplanned admissions and outcomes.
Benefits of early palliative referral in oncology are well documented. Palliative care referral "triggers" may help identify patients for referral. Many triggers have been proposed, but are not commonly used. This study reviewed the timing of palliative care involvement for patients in a tertiary referral oncology hospital, and whether the use of a trigger tool prior to admission would have facilitated earlier referral. ⋯ In this patient cohort, a palliative referral trigger tool may have proactively identified most patients prior to their terminal admission. Prospective testing of trigger tools in oncology populations is warranted.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and its treatment: an NIH Collaboratory study of claims data.
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a disabling complication of many chemotherapies. We investigated the feasibility of using health plan claims and administrative data to identify CIPN occurrence by comparing patients who received neurotoxic and non-neurotoxic chemotherapies. ⋯ These data suggest that as used currently by clinicians, administrative codes likely underestimate CIPN incidence. Thus, studies using administrative data to estimate CIPN incidence are not currently feasible. However, the drug-induced polyneuropathy code is a specific indicator of CIPN in administrative data and may be useful for investigating predictors or potentially preventive therapies of CIPN.
