Rate and patterns of ICU admission among colorectal cancer patients: a single-center experience.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate, in colorectal cancer patients, the cause of ICU admission and to find predictors of death during and after hospitalization. ⋯ This is the first study looking at specific causes for unplanned ICU admission of patients with colorectal cancer. Hospital mortality was influenced by the characteristics of the complication that entailed the ICU admission while cancer characteristics retained their prognostic influence on survival after hospital discharge.

Prediction of short- and long-term survival for advanced cancer patients after ICU admission.
Intensive care unit (ICU) admission of advanced cancer patients is controversial because it is associated with poor short-term prognosis. However, ICU admission of these patients might also result in administration of specific anticancer treatments and evaluation of tumor characteristics, which could influence long-term outcomes. Herein, we investigate whether there is a relationship between ICU admission and long-term outcomes for advanced cancer patients. ⋯ Clinical factors associated with acute, critical status upon ICU admission, such as APACHE II score and need of CRRT, were associated with a higher risk of ICU mortality and short-term mortality than factors directly associated with the patient's cancer. To understand the relationship between ICU admission and long-term survival, however, we have to apply more comprehensive approach that also considers tumor characteristics and disease control status.

The aim of this study was to identify the supportive care needs and unmet needs of women with breast cancer (BC) in rural Scotland. ⋯ Rural women with BC report similar unmet needs to their urban counterparts. Fear of recurrence is a key unmet need that should be addressed for all women with BC. However, they also report unique unmet needs because of rural location. Thus, it is critical that cancer services address the additional unmet needs of rural women with BC and, in particular, needs relating to distance from services.

Study of rolapitant, a novel, long-acting, NK-1 receptor antagonist, for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) due to highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC).
Rolapitant is a novel, long-acting neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor antagonist. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of four different doses of rolapitant for prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) due to highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC). ⋯ All doses of rolapitant were well tolerated and showed greater CR rates than active control. Rolapitant 180 mg demonstrated significant clinical efficacy for preventing CINV in the overall, delayed, and acute phases for patients receiving HEC.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyBrief versions of the FACIT-fatigue and FAACT subscales for patients with non-small cell lung cancer cachexia.
Cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) is common in advanced cancer patients and associated with weight loss, fatigue, impaired quality of life (QoL), and poor prognosis. The goal of this project was to identify the most responsive items from two QoL measures in the ROMANA 2 (NCT01387282) phase III global study evaluating anamorelin HCl in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cachexia: the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) and the Functional Assessment of Anorexia/Cachexia Therapy (FAACT). ⋯ These brief scales provide the psychometric properties necessary to promote future research in NSCLC patients with CACS. Additional work should examine the clinical utility of these scales and their impact on treatment decision-making.
