Facet tropism and facet joint orientation: risk factors for the development of early biochemical alterations of lumbar intervertebral discs.
To assess the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content of lumbar intervertebral discs (IVD) in healthy volunteers with facet tropism (FT) and sagittal facet joint (FJ) orientation using glycosaminoglycan chemical exchange saturation transfer imaging (gagCEST). ⋯ GagCEST analysis indicated lower GAG values of NP in young volunteers with FT and sagittal orientated FJ, indicating that FT and sagittal orientation of the FJ represent risk factors for the development of early biochemical alterations of lumbar IVDs.

Matrix metalloproteinase 12 is an indicator of intervertebral disc degeneration co-expressed with fibrotic markers.
Recent evidence suggests a role of fibrogenesis in intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. We aim to explore if fibrotic genes may serve as IVD degeneration indicators, and if their expression is associated with myofibroblast activity. ⋯ Our study suggests that in addition to a reduced KRT19 expression, an increased expression of MMP12, a profibrotic mediator, is characteristic of disc degenerative changes. Co-expression study indicates an association of the increased MMP12 positivity with myofibroblast activity in degenerated IVDs. Overall, our findings implicate an impact of MMP12 in disc cell homeostasis. The precise role of MMP12 in IVD degeneration warrants further investigation.

Associations between patellofemoral joint cartilage T1ρ and T2 and knee flexion moment and impulse during gait in individuals with and without patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis.
This study aimed to investigate the associations between patellofemoral cartilage T1ρ and T2 relaxation times and knee flexion moment (KFM) and KFM impulse during gait. ⋯ Our findings suggest that increased peak KFM and KFM impulse were related to worse cartilage health at the PFJ. This association is more prominent in superficial layer cartilage and cartilage with morphological lesions.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyExercise, manual therapy, and use of booster sessions in physical therapy for knee osteoarthritis: a multi-center, factorial randomized clinical trial.
(1) Do treatment effects differ between participants receiving manual therapy (MT) with exercise compared to subjects who don't, (2) are treatment effects sustained better when participants receive booster sessions compared to those who don't over a one year period in subjects with knee osteoarthritis (KOA)? ⋯ gov (NCT01314183).

T1ρ and T2 relaxation times are associated with progression of hip osteoarthritis.
To evaluate whether baseline T1ρ and T2 relaxation times of hip cartilage are associated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based progression of hip osteoarthritis (OA) at 18 months. ⋯ T1ρ and T2 relaxation parameters are associated with morphological cartilage degeneration at 18 months and may serve as potential imaging biomarkers for progression of cartilage lesions in hip OA.
