Determinants of revision and functional outcome following unicompartmental knee replacement.
Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKR) has important advantages over total knee replacement (TKR) but has a higher revision rate. Outcomes vary between centres, suggesting that risk factors for revision may be modifiable with changes to patient selection or operative technique. The objective of this study was to determine factors affecting revision, patient-reported outcome and satisfaction following UKR. ⋯ This study has identified important predictors of revision and patient-reported outcome following UKR. Older patients, who are least likely to be offered UKR, may derive the greatest benefits. Improved understanding of these factors may improve the long-term outcomes of UKR.

Metabolic enrichment of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids does not reduce the onset of idiopathic knee osteoarthritis in mice.
We evaluated the effect of a reduction in the systemic ratio of n-6:n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on changes in inflammation, glucose metabolism, and the idiopathic development of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in mice. We hypothesized that a lower ratio of n-6:n-3 PUFAs would protect against OA markers in cartilage and synovium, but not bone. ⋯ Reducing the systemic n-6:n-3 ratio does not slow idiopathic changes in cartilage, synovium, or bone associated with early-stage knee OA in mice. The anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic effects of n-3 PUFAs previously reported for cartilage may be more evident at later stages of disease or in post-traumatic and other inflammatory models of OA.

Concordance between important change and acceptable symptom state following knee arthroplasty: the role of baseline scores.
To assess the influence of baseline score on concordance between the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) and Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) estimates obtained on persons following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). ⋯ Baseline score has substantial influence on the extent of concordance between MCID and PASS for patients undergoing TKA. Clinicians should account for baseline score when interpreting either MCID or PASS and the extent to which these measures agree. These findings have potential to influence the interpretation of outcome following TKA.

Effect of interval-training exercise on subchondral bone in a chemically-induced osteoarthritis model.
The role of subchondral bone in osteoarthritis (OA) development is well admitted. Cross-talk between subchondral bone and cartilage may be disrupted in OA, leading to altered subchondral bone remodeling. Osteocytes are involved in bone remodeling control and could play a key role in OA progression. Our purpose of this study was to evaluate the preventive effect of interval-training exercise on subchondral bone and osteocyte in monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) model of experimental OA. ⋯ Our results suggest that preliminary interval-training improved BMD and osteocytes lacunar occupancy in subchondral bone. Our interval-training did not prevent MIA-induced cartilage degeneration.

Multicenter StudyExamining sex differences in knee pain: the multicenter osteoarthritis study.
To determine whether women experience greater knee pain severity than men at equivalent levels of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ Women reported greater knee pain than men regardless of KL grade, though effect sizes were generally small. These differences increased in the presence of PFOA. The strong contribution of WSP to sex differences in knee pain suggests that central sensitivity plays a role in these differences.
