Validation of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) for the treatment of focal cartilage lesions.
To validate the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) for the treatment of focal cartilage lesions. ⋯ This study illustrates the validity and reliability of the KOOS in measuring the clinical condition of patients after treatment of focal cartilage lesions. This study provides a basis for the use of the KOOS for future clinical research in cartilage repair.

Role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha in the regulation of plasminogen activator activity in rat knee joint chondrocytes.
To examine the effects of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) on the plasminogen activator's (PA) activity and on the expression of components of PA system in articular chondrocytes of rats. ⋯ HIF-1alpha may inhibit the PA activity through stimulating the expression of PAI-1 in normal articular chondrocytes. The inhibition of HIF-1alpha in the PA activity of articular chondrocytes probably plays an important role in the maintenance of articular cartilage matrix.

Intra-articular magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) reduces experimental osteoarthritis and nociception: association with attenuation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit 1 phosphorylation and apoptosis in rat chondrocytes.
To study the effects of intra-articular injection of magnesium sulfate (MgSO(4)) on the development of osteoarthritis (OA) and to examine concomitant changes in the nociceptive behavior of rats. ⋯ Our results indicate that local intra-articular administration of MgSO(4) following collagenase injection in an experimental rat OA model (1) modulates chondrocyte metabolism through inhibition of cell NMDA receptor phosphorylation and apoptosis, (2) attenuates the development of OA, and (3) concomitantly reduces nociception.

Cartilage damage in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI): preliminary results on comparison of standard diagnostic vs delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC).
To study the three-dimensional (3D) T1 patterns in different types of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) by utilizing delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and subsequent 3D T1 mapping. We used standard grading of OA by Tonnis grade on standard radiographs and morphological grading of cartilage in MRI for comparative analysis. ⋯ We conclude that a pattern of zonal T1 variation does seem to exist that is unique for different sub-groups of FAI. The FA GRE approach to perform 3D T1 mapping has a promising role for further studies of standard MRI and dGEMRIC in the hip joint.

Multi-language translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the OARSI/OMERACT measure of intermittent and constant osteoarthritis pain (ICOAP).
To conduct a multi-language translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Intermittent and Constant OsteoArthritis Pain (ICOAP) questionnaire for hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ The ICOAP questionnaire is now available for multi-center international studies.
