Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIntra-articular treatment of hip osteoarthritis: a randomized trial of hyaluronic acid, corticosteroid, and isotonic saline.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) and corticosteroids are both widely used for intra-articular treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). We examined the effect of both drugs in intra-articular treatment for hip OA. ⋯ Patients treated with corticosteroids experienced significant improvement during the 3 months of intervention, with an effect size indicating a moderate clinical effect. Although a similar significant result following treatment with HA could not be shown, the effect size indicated a small clinical improvement. A higher number of patients in future HA studies would serve to clarify this point.

Assessment of joint space narrowing with conventional standing antero-posterior radiographs: relief in mild-to-moderate pain is not a confounder in recent osteoarthritis structure-modifying drug trials.
Knee pain relief has been suggested to potentially alter radioanatomic positioning in conventional standing antero-posterior knee radiographs. This study was performed to determine whether this is always the case and in particular if it applied to two recent randomised, placebo-controlled trials showing both symptom- and structure-modification with glucosamine sulfate in knee osteoarthritis. ⋯ Knee pain relief did not bias the report of a structure-modifying effect of glucosamine sulfate in two recent long-term trials, possibly due to the mild-to-moderate patient characteristics. Consensus deliverables should acknowledge that the potential limitations of conventional standing antero-posterior radiographs should not be overestimated since they may not apply to all patient populations and to all studies using this gold standard technique.

Comparative StudyResponsiveness and clinically important differences for the WOMAC and SF-36 after hip joint replacement.
To study responsiveness and establish the minimal clinically important differences (MCID) and minimal detectable change (MDC) in patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR) using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). ⋯ These values indicate expected gains after THR. However, the MCID and MDC values must be viewed cautiously due to the uncertainty of these estimators and should not be considered as absolute thresholds.

Second-look arthroscopy of cartilage changes of the patellofemoral joint, especially the patella, following acute and recurrent patellar dislocation.
The purpose of this study was to clarify some pathogenesis of the cartilage changes of the patellofemoral joint in patellar dislocation knees. ⋯ One of the pathogenesis of fissuring in RPD knees seems to be cracking occurring at the time of APD. Two of the pathogenesis of fibrillation may result from the reparative reaction of the cartilage in osteochondral defect site and the cartilage change due to a high degree of cracking damage mainly on the central dome in APD injury. The continuation of patellar dislocation definitely makes the patellar cartilage lesions worse.
