Multicenter Study Observational StudyHealth care resource use, health care expenditures and absenteeism costs associated with osteoarthritis in US healthcare system.
We determined incremental health care resource utilization, incremental health care expenditures, incremental absenteeism, and incremental absenteeism costs associated with osteoarthritis. ⋯ Osteoarthritis was associated with significant incremental health care resource utilization, expenditures, absenteeism and absenteeism costs.

Neuropathic pain in end-stage hip and knee osteoarthritis: differential associations with patient-reported pain at rest and pain on activity.
We investigated whether pain at rest and pain on activity were differentially associated with neuropathic pain scores in individuals with end-stage hip and knee OA. ⋯ Findings support that possible neuropathic pain is experienced by a notable proportion of patients with end-stage hip and knee OA and is more strongly associated with pain at rest than pain on activity, particularly in men. Clinical presentation of pain at rest may warrant more thorough evaluation for potential neuropathic pain and have implications for appropriate pain management.

Development of quality indicators for hip and knee arthroplasty rehabilitation.
To develop quality indicators (QIs) reflecting the minimum acceptable standard of rehabilitation care before and after elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ This work represents the first QIs with which to measure, report and benchmark quality of care in patients receiving rehabilitation before and after THA/TKA surgery. The QIs will be further tested for reliability and feasibility before being widely disseminated in clinical settings and used to assess care gaps.

Randomized Controlled TrialModerators and mediators of effects of unloading shoes on knee pain in people with knee osteoarthritis: an exploratory analysis of the SHARK randomised controlled trial.
To investigate moderators and biomechanical mediators of effects of unloading shoes on knee pain in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ Unloading shoes conferred additional symptomatic benefits over conventional shoes in people with moderate to severe knee OA. There was some evidence effects may be mediated by a reduction in peak KAM. However, we were underpowered for subgroup analyses. These patients may represent a subgroup to which biomechanical interventions designed to reduce the KAM may be more effectively targeted.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyOne year effectiveness of neuromuscular exercise compared with instruction in analgesic use on knee function in patients with early knee osteoarthritis: the EXERPHARMA randomized trial.
To test long-term effectiveness of neuromuscular exercise (NEMEX) with instructions in optimized pharmacological treatment (PHARMA) on activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with early knee osteoarthritis. ⋯ S-20110153.
