Review Case Reports[Cryptococcus neoformans arthritis in elderly adult: case report and review].
Cryptococcal infection is not frequent in immunocompetent patients. The most commonly involved sites are the lungs and the central nervous system. Cryptococcal osteomyelitis occurs in 5-10% of patients with disseminated cryptococcosis with few reports of cryptococcal arthritis in elderly adults. We describe the case of a 92-year-old woman with a Cryptococcus neoformans knee joint infection associated to osteomyelitis.

Case Reports[Leuconostoc infections in patients with short gut syndrome, parenteral nutrition and continuous enteral feeding].
Leuconostoc is a gram-positive cocci, quite ubiquitous in nature. It is used in wine industry, and for aroma and texture of dairy products. ⋯ The isolation of a gram-positive cocci, that does not hydrolyze arginine and that is resistant to vancomycin leads to this diagnostic possibility. Antibiotic treatment: penicillin or ampicillin.

Review Case Reports[Granulomatous amoebic meningoencephalitis by Balamuthia mandrillaris: case report and literature review].
The free-living amebas Naegleria and Acanthamoeba are recognized as causal agents of central nervous system infections. Recently a third free-living ameba, Balamuthia mandrillaris, was identified as the causal agent of granulomatous encephalitis in humans. We report a case of Balamuthia encephalitis in an immunocompetent school-age girl who presented cutaneous lesions that compromised the central portion of the face. ⋯ Nevertheless, the child was readmitted six months later, with progressive neurological involvement, dying about one year after the onset of cutaneous symptoms. The brain necropsy showed the presence of B. mandrillaris cysts and trophozoites. Balamuthia mandrillaris infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient with chronic granulomatous disease with neurologic symptoms.

Subdural empyema is a rare complication of sinusitis in children. Its clinical presentation represents a neurosurgical emergency and as a scarcely recognized entity a delayed diagnosis rapidly increases its fatal prognosis. We report the clinical and radiological course of an adolescent with a subdural empyema secondary to sinusitis. Clinical and radiological features, laboratory findings and outcome of this condition are discussed based in a review of previously reported cases.

Case Reports[Disseminated fusariosis by Fusarium oxysporum in an adult patient with acute myeloid leukemia and severe febrile neutropenia].
We report the first case of disseminated fusariosis in an adult patient in Chile, with a hematologic neoplasia and chemotherapy that evolved with febrile prolonged neutropenia, refractory, treated with wide spectrum antibiotics and that developed a systemic infection with sinusal, cutaneous and pulmonary compromise by Fusarium oxysporum. He was refractory to antifungal treatment with amphotericin B deoxycholate and caspofungin that were administered in a sequential schedule. The fatal outcome of this patient was associated to persistent neutropenia and infection caused by a filamentous fungus usually resistant to antifungal therapy.
