Review Case Reports[Listeria monocytogenes infection in pregnancy: experience of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile University Hospital].
Listeria monocytogenes is Gram-positive facultative intracellular pathogen often foodborne and found elsewhere. It is an uncommon cause of illness in the general population. However, it is an important cause of severe infection in neonates, pregnant women, elderly and immunosuppressed patients. ⋯ Listeriosis should be considered during the evaluation of febrile syndrome in pregnancy as this condition can be the only risk factor. Blood and amniotic fluid cultures are useful diagnostic tests. Perinatal complications remains high.

[Nosocomial bloodstream infections caused by gram-negative bacilli: epidemiology and risk factors for mortality].
Nosocomial bacteremia is a major cause of hospital infection, associated with high rate of morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospital stay and higher costs. However, few prospective studies analyse the prognostic factors associated with mortality of gramnegative rods bloodstream infections in hospital wards outside of intensive care units. A prospective/descriptive study was conducted from March to December 2006. ⋯ Bacteremia derived from a high-mortality associated septic focus (RR 4.9, IC95%> 1.3 - 18.8) and admission to intensive care unit (RR 4.78, IC95%> 1.7- 13.1) were independent variables associated with mortality. Inappropriate empirical antibiotic treatment was not associated with greater risk of mortality. Nosocomial gramnegative bloodstream infections in our series were mainly due to non-fermentative bacilli and were associated with high mortality rates when their origin was a high risk septic focus or the patient was admitted to intensive care unit.

The species of Leuconostoc are uncommon opportunistic pathogens, which can be isolated in critically ill patients, immunocompromised hosts and in nosocomial infections. They are mostly isolated in bacteremia associated to intravascular devices and to the use of total parenteral nutrition. Nevertheless, other infections due to Leuconostoc sp have been described among which, meningitis, bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections and peritonitis have been reported. In this article we describe a series of cancer patients with Leuconostoc sp infections and their associated clinical conditions, and a literature review is presented.

[Is it necessary to perform a lumbar puncture in the evaluation of the febrile newborn infant without source?].
Lumbar puncture to detect bacterial meningitis is a recommended screening procedure to be performed in febrile newborn infants at admission to hospital. ⋯ The meningitis was a common diagnosis in febrile newborns without source, with prevalence of aseptic meningitis. In almost 25% of cases we reached to this diagnosis by means of performing lumbar puncture after a reappraisal.
