The quality of postoperative pain management from the perspectives of patients, nurses and patient records.
To study the quality of postoperative pain management in a university hospital. ⋯ In both departments, areas for improvements could be found in all subscales of the Strategic and Clinical Quality Indicators in Postoperative Pain Management questionnaire, i.e. communication, action, trust and environment. It is important to discuss what information the patient needs, as well as how and when it should be given. Furthermore, considering earlier pain experience and the goal of pain relief for the individual patient may facilitate an adequate assessment of the patient's pain. In future, electronic health records have the potential to support the use of clinical guidelines.

The purpose of this review was to describe findings of a systematic review of studies that examine the relationship between nursing leadership and patient outcomes. ⋯ The findings of this review suggest that an emphasis on developing transformational nursing leadership is an important organizational strategy to improve patient outcomes.

A demand for high quality care has drawn attention to leadership issues. The nurse managing role has changed over the years and become more complex with a high burden of work. Few studies describe the perspective of 'those being lead'. ⋯ The findings show that nursing leadership was considered to be 'being present and available in daily work', 'supporting everyday practice', 'facilitating professional acknowledgement' and to 'improve care both as individuals and as a team'. Transformational leadership seemed to be suitable to meet the staff perspective. In such leadership communicative skills is a core to work with strong professionals by being present and available.

The main aim of this paper is to uncover whether the actual career choices and job values of newly qualified nurses are in accordance with the predictions they made at the commencement of their nursing education. ⋯ During the student period, the bachelor programme was regarded as a basis for further education, but 2 years after graduation only 16% had realized further education. Preferences related to job values regarding a prospective job reveal a decrease in the importance of human contact and an increase in the importance of a high salary and job security from 2001 to 2003.

To examine factors within the nursing work environment that may affect nurse outcomes. ⋯ The results of this study underscore the importance of examining the environment in which nurses' work as a potential factor that influences outcomes experienced by patients and nurses.
