Previous studies have indicated that vitamin E deficiency and oxidative stress affect the beta cell function. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the association between vitamin E deficiency and oxidative status with prediabetes in apparently healthy subjects. ⋯ Results of the present study suggest that both vitamin E deficiency and oxidative status are associated with prediabetes in apparently healthy subjects.

Although preconditioning of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) has been shown to protect myocytes from hypoxia reoxgenation injury in vitro, the role of S1P postconditioning on myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (MIRI) in vivo and its related mechanism are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective role of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) postconditioning in MIRI via its effects on mitochondrial signaling and Akt/Gsk3β phosphorylation. ⋯ These results suggest that S1P postconditioning protects against MIRI by regulating mitochondrial signaling and Akt/Gsk3β phosphorylation.

Vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is prevalent in the vegetarian population and is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and cardiometabolic risk. The present study investigates the long-term effects of vitamin B12 deficiency/supplementation in the presence of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiometabolic profile and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid levels (LCPUFA) in the F3 generation offspring. ⋯ Vitamin B12 deficiency across three generations adversely affects LCPUFA and cardiometabolic profile in the adult offspring. This study provides clues for a combined supplementation of vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids to reduce the risk for noncommunicable diseases.

Bacteremia is a common serious manifestation of disease in the intensive care unit (ICU), which requires quick and accurate determinations of pathogens to select the appropriate antibiotic treatment. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional bacterial culture (BC), we have adapted next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology to identify pathogens from cell-free plasma DNA. ⋯ NGS technology can be applied to detect bacteria in clinical blood samples as an emerging diagnostic tool rich in information to determine the appropriate treatment of septic patients.

Small Dense Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Paraoxonase 1 and Lipid Profile in Postmenopausal Women: Quality or Quantity?
Atherosclerosis, the root cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), has a number of risk factors-some modifiable and some not. CVD increases in women particularly during the postmenopausal period. Small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL), a subclass of LDL, is an important determinant of atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women. Paraoxonase1 (PON1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme that prevents oxidative modifications in LDL and HDL. With this background, we studied the sdLDL-C, PON1 and lipid profile in postmenopausal women to compare between quality and quantity of LDL. ⋯ The results of the present study suggest quality, i.e., sdLDL-C, is more important than only LDL-C levels. Similarly, decrease in PON1 and increase in sdLDL-C go hand in hand. This shows that antioxidant capacity is compromised with a qualitative downfall in lipoproteins in postmenopausal women.
