Genees & Kunst 21, 3rd Lustrum--Annual Symposium on Medical Problems of Dancers & Musicians, Ede, The Netherlands, March 26, 2021.
On Friday, March 26, 2021, the Dutch Performing Arts Medicine Association (NVDMG) organized a scientific and artistic symposium "Genees & Kunst 21" for its 21st member assembly, at Akoesticum in Ede, The Netherlands. It was also the 3rd lustrum symposium, because in 2020 the NVDMG had its 15th anniversary and due to COVID-19 we had to postpone the symposium 1 year. The symposium was held digitally for the first time in the existence of the NVDMG.

Perceptions and Utilization of Strength Training and Conditioning in Collegiate Contemporary and Ballet Dancers: A Qualitative Approach.
Research demonstrates that dancers benefit from reduced injury risk and improved health by engaging in strength training and conditioning (STC). Historic bias within the discipline of dance, however, establishes a long-standing stigma that gains in muscle mass and strength lessen a dancer's aesthetic appearance, and thus many dancers rebuff STC as a supplement to dance training. However, there is growing evidence that dancers and dance educators are beginning to under¬stand the importance of additional resistance training and cardiovascular conditioning. This study explored dancers' perceptions and utilization of STC using a general qualitative approach. ⋯ While further research is needed, results from this study suggest STC could be initiated and promoted in the discipline of dance to further enhance physical fitness and general well-being. Dancers and dance instructors should receive education about the importance of STC within dance training as well as how to safely implement STC exercise into training regimens.

Injury Frequency and Characteristics in Adolescent and Adult Circus Artists: A Pilot Prospective Cohort Study.
Despite growing participation in circus arts, little is known about associated injuries. Understanding injury patterns is critical for developing interventions to decrease injury risk and guiding rehabilitation. ⋯ This pilot study comparing injuries in adolescent and adult circus artists found age but not exposure was predictive of injury risk. Use of a standardized injury surveillance guideline in circus, similar to the one used in this study, will provide greater insight into injury patterns by allowing between-study comparison.

ReviewHow to Treat Musicians with Frozen Shoulder: A Narrative Review.
Musicians comprise a specific occupational group with high musculoskeletal loads as well as demands. A frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a common musculoskeletal condition characterized by pain and loss of function of the glenohumeral joint. Despite being described as a generally self-limiting condition, the clinical course of the disease is unclear. ⋯ The aim of this narrative review is to provide healthcare providers and musicians with an overview of treatment principles for instrumental musicians with frozen shoulder. In this review, both general treatment principles as well as instrument-specific ergonomic tools are discussed. The aim is to provide an overview of the available tools to preserve a musician's playing capabilities and to enable early return to playing the instrument.

Development of a Machine Learning Model for the Estimation of Hip and Lumbar Angles in Ballet Dancers.
Accurate field-based assessment of dance kinematics is important to understand the etiology, and thus prevention and management, of hip and back pain. The study objective was to develop a machine learning model to estimate thigh elevation and lumbar sagittal plane angles during ballet leg lifting tasks, using wearable sensor data. ⋯ The models developed demonstrated an acceptable degree of accuracy for the estimation of thigh elevation angle and lumbar spine sagittal plane angle during dance-specific leg lifting tasks. This provides potential for a near-real-time, field-based measurement system.
