Discharge instruction comprehension by older adults in the emergency department: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Older adults are at high risk of adverse health outcomes in the post-emergency department (ED) discharge period. Prior work has shown that discharged older adults have variable understanding of their discharge instructions which may contribute to these outcomes. To identify discharge comprehension gaps amenable to future interventions, we utilize meta-analysis to determine patient comprehension across five domains of discharge instructions: diagnosis, medications, self-care, routine follow-up, and return precautions. ⋯ Older patients discharged from the ED had greater comprehension of self-care and follow-up instructions than about their medications. These findings suggest that medication instructions may be a priority domain for future interventions.

In the United States (US), the quality of care provided to children during emergencies is highly variable. Following implementation of the National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP), inclusive of two national online assessments of Emergency Departments (EDs), national organizations involved in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems convened to launch the Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project (PPRP). The PPRP seeks to ensure high-quality pediatric prehospital emergency care for all children. One of the first priorities of PPRP is to assess the current level of pediatric readiness in EMS systems. The development of the first comprehensive national assessment of pediatric readiness in EMS systems is described. ⋯ The inaugural PPRP Assessment was open access May through July 2024, and the results will be used to guide future PPRP efforts.

Precision health is a burgeoning scientific discipline that aims to incorporate individual variability in biological, behavioral, and social factors to develop personalized health solutions. To date, emergency medicine has not deeply engaged in the precision health movement. However, rapid advances in health technology, data science, and medical informatics offer new opportunities for emergency medicine to realize the promises of precision health. ⋯ Precision emergency medicine leverages new technology and data-driven artificial intelligence to advance diagnostic testing, individualize patient care plans and therapeutics, and strategically refine the convergence of the health system and the community.
