Early Lactate Values After Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: Associations With One-Year Outcome.
Previous studies have shown associations between high admission serum lactate, lower lactate clearance, and increased short-term mortality after out-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We studied whether lactate levels predict long- term outcome after OHCA. ⋯ In the present study time-weighted mean lactate values for the entire ICU stay, and the last measured lactate value in the ICU, but not admission lactate or lactate clearance were independent predictors of poor 1-year outcome.

Soluble Suppression Of Tumorigenicity-2 Predicts Hospital Mortality in Burn Patients: An Observational Prospective Cohort Pilot Study.
The IL33/ST2 pathway has been implicated in the pathogenesis of different inflammatory diseases. Our aim was to analyze whether plasma levels of biomarkers involved in the IL33/ST2 axis might help to predict mortality in burn patients. ⋯ Plasma sST2 at day 3 predicts hospital mortality in burn patients.

A Novel Implementation of Magnetic Levitation to Quantify Leukocyte Size, Morphology, and Magnetic Properties to Identify Patients with Sepsis.
We have developed a novel, easily implementable methodology using magnetic levitation to quantify circulating leukocyte size, morphology, and magnetic properties, which may help in rapid, bedside screening for sepsis. ⋯ Septic patients had circulating leukocytes with especially increased size parameters, which distinguished sepsis from noninfected patients with promising high accuracy. This portal-device compatible technology shows promise as a potential bedside diagnostic.

Risk Factors for Acute Mesenteric Ischemia in Critically Ill Burns Patients-A Matched Case-Control Study.
Burn-induced shock can lead to tissue hypoperfusion, including the gut. We performed this study to describe burn patients at risk of acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) with the aim to identify potential modifiable risk factors. ⋯ Burns patients with initial low cardiac output and early multiple organ dysfunction are at high risk of nonocclusive AMI.
