The cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) region of the hippocampus is specifically vulnerable to global ischemia. We hypothesized that histopathological outcome in a ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest (VFCA) rat model depends on the time point of the examination. ⋯ The amount and type of brain lesions present after global ischemia depend on the survival time. A consistent reduction in pyramidal cells in the CA1 region was present in all animals 14 days after VFCA, but in two-thirds of animals a repopulation of pyramidal cells seems to have taken place after 140 days.

This study aimed to assess the severity of acute lung injury after mild or severe hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation, and to examine the therapeutic effects of suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) on lung injury. ⋯ Total blood volume loss of 40% results in acute lung injury, whereas loss of 20% does not. Treatment with SAHA alleviates lung injury induced by severe hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation and the underlying mechanism involves a reversal of decreased histone acetylation and inhibition of the NF-κB pathway.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging zoonosis infected by virus (SFTSV) in central and eastern China, which is associated with high mortality. However, limited clinical data have been reported about this critical illness. ⋯ We provided knowledge about the clinical characteristics of SFTS admitted in ICU. Older age, elevated lactate level, and elevated creatinine level may be useful for identifying patients with poor outcome and intensive medical intervention can be provided for patients as soon as possible to reduce mortality.

Hemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) have been proposed as alternatives to blood for decades. Previous studies demonstrated that large molecular diameter HBOCs based on polymerized bovine Hb (PolybHb) attenuate Hb side-effects and toxicity. The objective of this study was to test the safety and efficacy of tense state PolybHb after long-term storage. ⋯ These studies indicate that large molecular diameter PolybHb is as efficacious as fresh blood in restoring cardiac function and confirm the lack of degradation of PolybHb's safety or efficacy during long-term storage.

Global cerebral ischemia-induced neuroinflammation causes neurofunctional impairment following cardiac arrest. Previous studies have demonstrated that the activation of protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) contributes to neuroinflammation. In the present study, we aimed to determine the potential treatment effect of PAR-2 inhibition against neuroinflammation in the setting of asphyxial CA (ACA) in rats. ⋯ PAR-2 inhibition diminished neuroinflammation and thereby reduced hippocampal neuronal degeneration and neurocognitive impairment following ACA. This effect was at least partly mediated via the PAR-2/ERK1/2 signaling.
