Activation-induced Cell Death Drives Profound Lung CD4(+) T Cell Depletion in HIV-associated COPD.
As overall survival improves, individuals with HIV infection become susceptible to other chronic diseases, including accelerated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ Together, our results provide evidence for profound lung mucosal CD4(+) T-cell depletion via a Fas-dependent activation-induced cell death mechanism, along with impaired HIV-specific CD4(+) immunity as immunologic features of HIV-associated COPD.

Matrix Metalloproteinase-19 Promotes Metastatic Behavior In Vitro and is Associated with Increased Mortality in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States and worldwide. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in the development and progression of lung cancer, but their role in the molecular pathogenesis of lung cancer remains unclear. We have found that MMP19, a relatively novel member of the MMP family, is overexpressed in lung tumors when compared with control subjects. ⋯ Taken together, these findings suggest that MMP19 is associated with the development and progression of NSCLC and may be a potential biomarker of disease severity and outcome.

FGF Receptor Inhibition is Active Against Mesothelioma and Synergizes with Radio- and Chemotherapy.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an aggressive malignancy characterized by frequent resistance to chemo- and radiotherapy, poor outcome, and limited therapeutic options. Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors are potential targets for cancer therapy, but their significance in mesothelioma has remained largely undefined. ⋯ Our data suggest that the malignant phenotype of mesothelioma cells depends on intact FGF signals, which should be considered as therapeutic targets with a promising chemo- and radiosensitizing potential.
