Carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) is a strong predictor of future vascular events. However, data for Turkish individuals are limited and the association between cardiometabolic risk factors and CIMT has not been studied before. Therefore, we sought to investigate the CIMT and cardiometabolic risk associates in a large cohort of Turkish adults. ⋯ Age, systolic blood pressure and smoking amount (pack/year) were the only age- and sex-adjusted associates of CIMT. Age had the best AUC in ROC analysis predicting thickened carotid artery intima media. Hypertension, systolic blood pressure and age were independent predictors of high CIMT in Turkish adults.

Evaluation of acute infection-induced endothelial dysfunction and its potential mediators.
Inflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Some studies suggest a link between chronic infections, an inflammatory state, and endothelial dysfunction. However, data related to acute infections are scant. We have investigated: (i) the effect of acute infection on endothelial function; (ii) the role of potential mediators of endothelial dysfunction. ⋯ Acute infection causes transient endothelial dysfunction. It increases inflammatory markers and generates an atherogenic lipid profile. Among the parameters evaluated, only the change in Apo-A1 level was associated with acute infection-induced endothelial dysfunction.

Torsional and longitudinal deformations are essential components of left ventricular (LV) performance. A precise assessment of LV function must take into account both LV torsion (LVtor) and global longitudinal strain (LVE). We compared a new 2D-strain parameter, LVtor x LVE, with several other echocardiographic parameters, with respect to their strength of association with N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) in patients with reduced LV ejection fraction (LVEF). ⋯ In patients with reduced LVEF, LVtor x LVE is a promising parameter that deserves research to establish its clinical meaning and prognostic value.

Intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery--diagnostic challenge.
Pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma is a rare tumour and the diagnosis is often delayed. We report the case of a woman with a primary pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma who presented with massive pulmonary embolism. The definitive diagnosis was elucidated after the patient's death by autopsy specimen. We discuss the diagnosis and lessons learned from this case.

Prophylactic intra-aortic balloon pump reduces C-reactive protein levels and early mortality in high-risk patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.
Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) plays a pivotal role in the treatment of cardiogenic shock complicating acute myocardial infarction. However, the usefulness of prophylactic IABP support in high-risk patients during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is still controversial, and its influence on the inflammatory response following PCI has not been well evaluated. In this study we sought to assess the impact of prophylactic IABP support upon C-reactive protein (CRP) level and clinical prognosis in high-risk patients undergoing PCI. ⋯ The use of a prophylactic IABP in high-risk patients before PCI could reduce the CRP level and reduce mortality during the early phase following PCI.
