Prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases in Croatian children is increasing: survey study.
To estimate the prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis among school children in the region of Primorsko-goranska County in Croatia, and compare the results with data from other countries. ⋯ Results suggest an increase in the prevalence of atopic disease symptoms in north-west part of Croatia over the last few decades when compared to prior studies. The results are suitable for international comparison, suggesting that this part of Croatia is a county with a moderate prevalence of atopic diseases in the pediatric population. The results represent a baseline for further epidemiological research of asthma and allergic diseases.

Plasma concentration of immunoglobulin classes and subclasses in children with autism in the Republic of Macedonia: retrospective study.
To examine plasma concentration of IgA, IgM, IgG classes, and IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4 subclasses in children with autism. ⋯ Children with autism have increased plasma concentration of immunoglobulines. Increased immunoglobulines in children with autism could be a result of impaired development of the immune system, and/or genetic factors connected with defense mechanism in these children.

Revitalization of academic medicine in Macedonia--an urgent need.
This paper presents the current status of the academic medicine of the Skopje University Faculty of Medicine and the necessity of the medical education reform, initiated in 2001 by the decision of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University Rectorate Administration to introduce the credit system in the university education in the Republic of Macedonia. This essay describes and reviews the actual conditions and priority problems and needs; proposes activities that should be undertaken to solve and overcome the existing problems and provide further development of teaching and research at the Faculty. Structural reorganization and overall mobilization of the human resources of the Faculty towards achieving the desired goals is needed.

EditorialStructure of the 2003 impact factor for Croatian medical journal.
According to the Journal Citation Report from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), the last year's (2003) impact factor (IF) of the Croatian Medical Journal (CMJ) was 0.943. To determine the factors that contributed to this significant increase in the IF, we analyzed the structure of citations to CMJ in the ISI's publications, Science Citation Index (SCI), and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). Thematic issues generally acquired more citations than regular issues. ⋯ In future, we can expect year-to-year variations in the journals IF. This trend may be positive on a long-term basis, but expectation of a value significantly higher than 1 is unrealistic. CMJ is small general medical journal whose quality-oriented editorial policy may in the long-term result in the increase in the IF.

Frequent attenders in family practice in Croatia: retrospective study.
To determine the number of "frequent attenders" in family practice offices in Croatia according to the number and proportion of frequent attender visits in the total number of visits, and to follow up the frequent attenders and the number of visits they made over a period of three years. ⋯ Frequent attender visits make a great proportion of the total number of visits to family practice offices in Croatia, a country with a health care system in transition. Eight percent of patients remained being frequent attenders during all three study years.
