Determinants of reduced bone mineral density and increased bone turnover after kidney transplantation: cross-sectional study.
To analyze bone metabolism and the risk factors of bone loss in kidney transplant recipients. ⋯ Osteopenia/osteoporosis and increased bone turnover were present in more than a half of the kidney transplant recipients. Reduced BMD was associated with enhanced bone remodeling, primarily mediated by PTH hypersecretion. The length of post-transplantation period, cumulative steroid dose, gender, and age could not be identified as risk factors of reduced BMD.

Neurophysiology and molecular genetics of Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 neuropathy in Croatian children: follow-up study.
Longitudinal assessment of clinical and neurophysiological abnormalities in childhood and adolescence and incidence analysis of tandem Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A gene duplication in Croatian children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 neuropathy. ⋯ Pronounced neurographic abnormalities and mild clinical features characterize Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 neuropathy in the first decade. There were no significant differences in neurographic abnormalities in the first or second decade of life between Croatian children with and without Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A duplication.

Comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder and alcohol dependence in displaced persons.
To investigate in displaced persons a) the prevalence rate of current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol dependence; b) the relationship of alcohol dependence and current PTSD; and c) trauma exposure in relation to alcohol dependence comorbid to PTSD. ⋯ War traumas may have a role in the development of alcohol dependence in displaced men with current PTSD. The number of war traumas had a strong effect on the development of PTSD. Sex is a relevant factor in studying comorbidity of current PTSD and alcohol dependence.

Case ReportsCerebrospinal fluid seepage through polyglactin 910 dura substitute manifested as spinal extradural collection of fluid.
Following excision of pilocytic astrocytoma, a 12-year-old girl underwent posterior cranial fossa synthetic duraplasty with polyglactin 910 mesh. On the 8th postoperative day, unusual extradural collection was diagnosed by spinal magnetic resonance imaging. ⋯ Unusual extradural collection detected by spinal magnetic resonance imaging was assumed to be the consequence of cerebrospinal fluid seepage and a warning sign of cerebrospinal fluid leakage following synthetic posterior fossa duraplasty. This case shows that polyglactin 910 mesh may be ineffective when used for posterior cranial fossa duraplasty in children, although it is considered as valuable as autologous tissue.

Case ReportsInvolvement of patched (PTCH) gene in Gorlin syndrome and related disorders: three family cases.
To find genetic alterations in PTC or other genes of the Shh/PTCH pathway in tumorous and non- tumorous samples from three families and to correlate them with the varying expression of disorders in presented nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) phenotypes. ⋯ Further analysis of relatively sparse cases of NBCCS is needed before the symptoms of the syndrome could be convincingly explained by genetic alterations in the Shh/PTCH signalling pathway.
