The aim of our study was to determine if the genotype of the matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) gene might carry the risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) in patients with myocardial infarction. ⋯ MMP-3 gene polymorphism had no predominant effect on the development of ARMD in patients with myocardial infarction.

The inherited macular dystrophies are characterized by different grade central visual loss and different character macula atrophy, because of retinal pigment epithelium lesion. The cause of photoreceptors degeneration is still not known. ⋯ It is known seven gene mutations (ABCA4, ELOVL4, PROML1, VMD2, Peripherin/RDS, TIMP3, XLRS), which may cause inherited macular dystrophies development. Inheritance type of inherited macular dystrophies, prevalence, beginning of disease, spread of the disease between female and male, clinic, electroretinography, electrooculography, differential diagnosis, genetic research and prognosis are also reviewed.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Comparison of different anesthetic regimens in patients undergoing laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding operations: a prospective randomized trial.
Obesity is a multisystem disorder, particularly involving the respiratory and cardiovascular systems; therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is required. In spite of widespread performance of weight reduction (bariatric) surgeries, information regarding the anesthetic care of morbidly obese patients is scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of fentanyl and remifentanil on the time of recovery, breathing parameters, and postoperative pain in morbidly obese patients undergoing laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding operations. ⋯ The time to extubation was shorter in the remifentanil group, but there was no significant difference in the time to discharge from the postanesthesia care unit. The recovery of respiratory parameters to the baseline values was better and faster in the remifentanil group. The intensity of postoperative pain was similar in both groups (VAS, <3) CONCLUSIONS: Remifentanil showed good analgesic properties during laparoscopic gastric banding surgery. Postanesthesia recovery and return of respiratory parameters to the baseline values was faster when remifentanil was used. Postoperative pain and the rate of opioid-induced side effects after analgesia with remifentanil were similar as after anesthesia with a longer acting opioid, fentanyl. Despite the problem widely discussed in literature about remifentanil-induced hyperalgesia, no cases of analgesic overconsumption were registered in our study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the biomechanical effects of locking reconstruction plate positioning on the osteosynthesis of clavicle midshaft simulated transverse fractures. ⋯ The superior plating osteosynthesis of simulated midshaft transverse clavicle fractures with the 7-hole 3.5-mm locking reconstruction plate had a significantly higher bending (from top to bottom) load to failure in comparison with the anteroinferior plating osteosynthesis of the clavicle with the identical implants. Clavicles plated with the 7-hole 3.5-mm locking reconstruction plate at the superior aspect exhibited a significantly greater biomechanical stability at a load of 40 N than those plated at the anteroinferior aspect.

OBJECTIVE. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of bupropion sustained release (SR) on cognitive function, evaluated by event-related potentials (ERPs), in heavy tobacco smokers. MATERIAL AND METHODS. ⋯ The increases in the P3b and P2 amplitudes for target events in the parietal area are very suggestive of this hypothesis, since these components reflect the response to task-relevant target events. Meanwhile, the increased P2 latency for standard events may reflect reduced attention resources for the processing of standard events due to increased attention resources allocated for task-relevant target events. Decreased distractibility and increased attention are believed to be caused by bupropion.
