Research investigating hydration strategies specialized for women's soccer players is limited, despite the growth in the sport. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of fluid balance and electrolyte losses in collegiate women's soccer players. Eighteen NCAA Division I women's soccer players were recruited (age: 19.2 ± 1.0 yr; weight: 68.5 ± 9.0 kg, and height: 168.4 ± 6.7 cm; mean ± SD), including: 3 forwards (FW), 7 mid-fielders (MD), 5 defenders (DF), and 3 goalkeepers (GK). ⋯ Hydration strategies should target pre-practice to ensure players are adequately hydrated. Environments deemed to be of moderate risk of hyperthermia significantly elevated the sweat rate but did not influence fluid intake and hydration status compared to low-risk environments. Given the differences in fluid balance and sweat responses, recommendations should be issued relative to soccer position.

Dementia comprises a wide range of progressive and acquired neurocognitive disorders. Obesity, defined as excessive body fat tissue, is a common health issue world-wide and a risk factor for dementia. The adverse effects of obesity on the brain and the central nervous system have been the subject of considerable research. ⋯ However, obesity is a complex health condition, while the human brain is the most complicated organ, so research in this area is difficult. Inconsistency in definitions and measurement techniques detract from the literature on brain-body relationships. Advanced techniques developed in recent years are capable of improving investigations of this relationship.

Background and objectives: There is no consensus regarding accurate methods for assessing the size of the implant required for achieving symmetry in direct-to-implant (DTI) breast reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ideal implant size could be estimated using 3D breast volume or mastectomy specimen weight, and to compare prediction performances between the two variables. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent immediate DTI breast reconstruction from August 2017 to April 2020 were included in this study. ⋯ The prediction model for the ideal implant size using the 3D volume showed better prediction performance than that of using the mastectomy specimen weight (R2 = 0.900 vs 0.759, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The 3D volume of the healthy breast is a more reliable predictor than mastectomy specimen weight to estimate the ideal implant size. The estimation formula obtained in this study may assist in the selection of the ideal implant size in unilateral DTI breast reconstruction.

Background and Objectives: A complex network of axonal pathways interlinks the human brain cortex. Brain networks are not distributed evenly, and brain regions making more connections with other parts are defined as brain hubs. Our objective was to analyze brain hub region volume and cortical thickness and determine the association with cognitive assessment scores in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. ⋯ Conclusions: In our study, hippocampal volume and entorhinal cortex showed significant differences in the MCI and dementia patient groups. Additionally, we found a statistically significant positive correlation between MoCA scores, hippocampal volume, entorhinal cortex thickness, and right precuneus. Although other brain hub regions did not show statistically significant differences, there should be additional research to evaluate the brain hub region association with MCI and dementia.

Background and objectives: In patients on hemodialysis, erectile dysfunction is an independent mortality factor. This study aimed to determine the risk factors that affect the survival of hemodialysis patients with erectile dysfunction. Materials and Methods: During a seven-year period, erectile dysfunction was identified among the fatalities reported in patients receiving chronic hemodialysis, on the basis of the International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire. ⋯ Results: Statistically significant differences between the two groups of respondents were found concerning dialysis duration (p < 0.001), number of leukocytes (p = 0.003), adequacy of hemodialysis (p = 0.004), intima media thickness of the carotid artery (p < 0.001), presence of cardiovascular disease (p = 0.03), residual diuresis (p = 0.04), and hemodiafiltration (p < 0.001). Hemodialysis adequacy (B = -9.634; p = 0.017), intima media thickness (B = 0.022; p = 0.003), residual diuresis (B = -0.060; p = 0.007), and lower rates of cardiovascular disease (B = 0.176; p = 0.034) were significant survival predictors among our patients with erectile dysfunction. Conclusions: Risk factors that are associated with improved survival of patients on hemodialysis with erectile dysfunction in our study are: preserved diuresis, high-quality hemodialysis, lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, and less thickening of the intima media of the carotid arteries.
