Background and Objectives: Adequate dietary intake of iodine and selenium is essential during pregnancy. While iodine is vital for maternal thyroid function and fetal development, selenium contributes to the regulation of thyroid function and thyroid autoimmunity. This study aimed to assess the consumption of iodine- and selenium-containing products by women of reproductive age and the iodine and selenium nutritional status of pregnant women in Latvia. ⋯ The median selenoprotein P level was 6.9 (3.1-9.0) mg/L. Conclusions: Iodine nutrition in Latvian population of pregnant women was near the lower limit of adequate and a third of the population had a selenium deficiency. Supplements were frequently used, but most did not contain the recommended amounts of iodine and selenium.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease and the main cause of pain and disability in elderly people. OA currently represents a significant social health problem, since it affects 250 million individuals worldwide, mainly adults aged over 65. Although OA is a multifactorial disease, depending on both genetic and environmental factors, it is reported that joint degeneration has a higher prevalence in former athletes. ⋯ A physical stimulus triggers a biological response by regulating specific intracellular pathways, thus acting as a drug. Preclinical and clinical trials have shown positive effects of biophysical stimulation on articular cartilage, subchondral bone and synovia. This review aims to assess the role of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) and extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in the prevention and treatment of joint degeneration in athletes.

Background and Objectives: The research on the therapeutic effect of preoperative radiotherapy (PRRT) for patients with early non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still insufficient, and the impact of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) on the prognosis of patients with early NSCLC remains controversial. We conducted this study to investigate the effect of PORT and PRRT on prognosis for these patients. Materials and Methods: In total, 3640 patients with stage II NSCLC who underwent a lobectomy or pneumonectomy were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. ⋯ On the other hand, PORT may help to improve the prognosis of patients with N1 stage who have three or more lymph node metastases. Hence, PORT and PRRT should not be recommended for patients with N0 stage. However, in patients with "high volume" N1 stage, PORT might improve oncological outcomes.

Background and Objectives: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common and highly prevalent types of arthritis, also considered a multiphenotypic disease with a strong metabolic component. Ageing is the primary risk factor for OA, while the age-related decline in autophagic activity affects cell function and chondrocyte homeostasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) in autophagy dysregulation and lipid metabolism in human OA chondrocytes. ⋯ Conclusions: Our results suggest that SIRT1 regulates lipid homeostasis through LOX-1 expression regulation. Additionally, we indicate that the necessity of SIRT1 for autophagy induction in normal chondrocytes, together with its selective autophagic degradation in OA chondrocytes, could contribute to autophagy dysregulation in OA. We, therefore, suggest a novel regulatory scheme that functionally connects lipid metabolism and autophagy in late-stage OA.

Anal canal duplication (ACD) is a very rare condition, diagnosed and treated mostly in childhood. Less than 90 cases have been reported in the literature so far. We are presenting a case of a young woman who underwent surgical excision of the duplication when she was 27 years old. ⋯ Due to the lack of bothersome symptomatology, the patient did not seek any special investigations for her condition until she was in her late twenties. ACD is a very rare condition in adults that might pass unnoticed, but a midline opening posterior to the anus should always raise the suspicion of a secondary anal canal. Surgery is the only cure for this condition with good results after a proper pre-operative workout to reveal others simultaneous malformations.
