Impaired folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM) is associated with many pathologies and developmental abnormalities. FOCM is a metabolic network of interdependent biosynthetic pathways that is known to be compartmentalized in the cytoplasm, mitochondria and nucleus. Currently, the biochemical mechanisms and causal metabolic pathways responsible for the initiation and/or progression of folate-associated pathologies have yet to be fully established. ⋯ This review is intended to fill gaps in knowledge associated with these clinical diseases and impaired FOCM. Additionally, some of the therapeutics will be discussed at this early time point in studying impaired FOCM in each of the above clinical disease states. It is hoped that this review will allow the reader to better understand the role of FOCM in the development and treatment of clinical disease states that may be associated with impaired FOCM and how to restore a more normal functional role for FOCM through improved nutrition and/or restoring the essential water-soluble B vitamins through oral supplementation.

Background and Objectives: Despite being largely preventable, cervical cancer mortality still remains an important public health problem globally, in Europe, and in Romania. The European Union member states are urged to implement systematic, population-based screenings for cervical cancer, but the programs developed by the countries remain very heterogeneous. This study aimed to investigate the differences in cervix cancer mortality between Romania and EU and within Romania over the last two decades and to reveal the major sources of inequalities and the policy implications. ⋯ These differences used to be very high in the past and are still persisting. Conclusions: The country should revisit its national cervical cancer screening program, which has been implemented for many years, but with a very limited participation rate. Due to the similar problems existing in Central-Eastern Europe, targeted support from the EU for the members from this geographical area could contribute to the minimization of differences in cervical cancer mortality among the EU members.

Background and Objectives: To report the long-term outcomes of patients with refractory Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) who underwent surgical excision of giant papillae (GP) with mitomycin C (MMC) 0.02% and amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT). Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective interventional single-center case series including five eyes of four patients who had refractory, symptomatic VKC with GP, along with corneal shield ulcers and/or punctate epithelial erosions. They underwent surgical excision of GP with MMC 0.02% alone (1 eye) or with MMC 0.02% and AMT (4 eyes). ⋯ Four patients had the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) >/= 6/9.5. One patient had BCVA 6/15 at the final follow-up due to the presence of anterior corneal stromal scar and poor ocular surface. Conclusions: Surgical excision of GP in combination with MMC and AMT, in refractory VKC, is a good treatment option with better clinical outcomes over a longer follow-up.

Background and objective: Sleeping difficulties affect the overall health, nutrition, and wellbeing. The Mediterranean diet has proven effective in improving the quality of life and overall health of people of all ages. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) is linked to reduced insomnia in Arabic-speaking female adults in Jordan. ⋯ Among the MD adherence score categories, we found that between groups, MD scores above or equal to 10 were associated with a statistically significant difference in AIS. Cohen's value was calculated for the three MD score categories and indicated a 'small' effect size association between all adherence scores of the MD categories and AIS. Conclusions: In conclusion, our findings provide preliminary evidence that participants' adherence to the MD was significantly associated with better sleep and reduced insomnia symptoms, highlighting the need for further research.

Background and Objectives: Hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance are not synonymous; if the risk of developing insulin resistance in adolescents is monitored, they do not necessarily have hyperinsulinemia. It is considered a condition of pre-diabetes and represents a condition of increased risk of developing DM (diabetes mellitus); it can exist for many years without people having the appropriate symptoms. This study aims to determine the risk of developing hyperinsulinemia at an early age in adolescents by examining which factors are crucial for its occurrence. ⋯ The research described in this paper aimed to use the most popular AI (artificial intelligence) model, ANN (artificial neural network), to show that 13.1% of adolescents are at risk, i.e., the risk is higher by 0.4%, which was shown by statistical tests as a significant difference. Conclusions: It is estimated that a model using three different ANN architectures, based on Taguchi's orthogonal vector plans, gives more precise and accurate results with much less error. In addition to monitoring changes in each individual's risk, the risk assessment of the entire monitored group is updated without having to analyze all data.
