Osteoid osteomas are one of the most common bone tumors. Although benign in nature, they can cause significant pain and distress to the afflicted patient. The main goal of treatment is to relieve pain. ⋯ However, the literature is sparse regarding the safety and efficacy of this treatment. Here, we discuss our experience with microwave ablation in the treatment of osteoid osteomas in two patients and review the current literature on this technique. Microwave ablation in the treatment of osteoid osteoma seems to be a safe and effective treatment for this tumor.

When the pandemic started in February, about 5 million women were running businesses. Just 2 months later, 25% of those businesses closed. Approximately 2.5 million women have lost their jobs or dropped out of the workforce since the pandemic, but that is just the start of the impact on women. ⋯ The pandemic is sure to amplify these issues. Without mitigation and prevention, women's hearts will suffer. We need to be aware of this now to prepare for the future potential of a significant increase in the incidence of women and heart disease.

Background and objectives: Persistent left bundle branch block (P-LBBB) has been associated with poor clinical outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures. We hypothesized that the distance from the aortic valve to the proximal conduction system, expressed as the effective distance between the aortic valve and conduction system (EDACS), can predict the occurrence of P-LBBB in patients undergoing a TAVI procedure. Materials and methods: In a retrospective study, data from 269 patients were analyzed. ⋯ In patients with EDACS of ≤3 mm and >10 mm, the chance of developing P-LBBB was ≥50% and <10%, respectively. Conclusions: A small EDACS increases the risk for the development of P-LBBB during TAVI by a factor of >25. As EDACS can be measured pre-procedurally, it may be a valuable additional factor to weigh the risks of transcatheter and surgical aortic valve replacement.

Background and Objectives: Determine the contribution of coexisting factors to the risk to develop Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaws among patients who have received radiotherapy by intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) between 2013 and 2016, in a single medical center. Materials and Methods: The records of all patients treated with IMRT for HNC between 2013 and 2016 in The Davidoff Center for the treatment and Research of Cancer in Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson hospital, Petah-Tikva, Israel were screened. Patients who have received a minimum mean dose of 40 Gy to the oral cavity entered the research and their medical records were retrospectively reviewed. ⋯ In three out of those seven patients (42.9%), the tumor was located in the mandible. Conclusions: within the limits of the relatively small cohort in the current study, we suggest that the development of ORN due to Radiation therapy (RT) with IMRT is related significantly only to the location of a tumor in the mandible. Other co-factors do not significantly increase the risk to develop ORN when RT is delivered via IMRT.

Background and Objectives: Risk management is considered an integral part of laboratory medicine to assure laboratory quality and patient safety. However, the concept of risk management is philosophical, so actually performing risk management in a clinical laboratory can be challenging. Therefore, we would like to develop a sustainable, practical system for continuous total laboratory risk management. ⋯ Conclusion: We developed and applied a practical computerized risk-management tool based on FMEA and FRACAS methods for the entire testing process. RRMT was useful to detect, evaluate, and report failures. This system might be a great example of a risk management system optimized for clinical laboratories.
