Corneal Biomechanical Changes in Third Trimester of Pregnancy.
Background and Objectives: There is a clear evidence that pregnancy is associated with high production of sex hormones. During the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy, blood hormones levels increase gradually. Cells with affinity for sex hormones have been identified in different ocular tissues, such as: lid, lacrimal gland, meibomian gland, bulbar and palpebral conjunctivae, cornea, iris, ciliary body, lens, retina (retinal pigment epithelium) and choroid. ⋯ Results: Important changes in corneal biomechanics (corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factor) parameters were observed in women in the third trimester of pregnancy, but these variations were not statistically significant. Also, a decrease in intraocular pressure was mentioned in these women, but only the corneal compensation intraocular pressure showed a decrease with statistical significance. Conclusions: A decrease in corneal compensatory intraocular pressure was observed in pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy, but without other statistically significant changes resulting from the analysis of the other three parameters (corneal hysteresis, corneal resistance factor and Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure).

Idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) is an umbrella term for diseases of unknown origin that cause muscle inflammation. Dermatomyositis and polymyositis are IIMs that commonly cause interstitial lung disease (ILD). When a patient presents with ILD, the evaluation of whether the case displays the characteristics of myositis should be determined by interview, physical examination, imaging findings, the measurement of myositis-related antibodies, and the determination of disease severity after diagnosis. ⋯ Importantly, however, anti-ARS antibody-positive ILD often recurs and sometimes develops into fibrosis. Early diagnosis is crucial for treatment, and we therefore need to clarify the features of myositis associated with ILD and suspect these pathologies early. This section reviews what clinicians need to look for and what findings are evaluated in patients when diagnosing myositis associated with ILD.

COVID-19 Pandemic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: A Social Inequality Report.
Background and Objectives: To perform a retrospective report on the lethality of COVID-19 in different realities in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Materials and Methods: We accomplished an observational study by collecting the data about total confirmed cases and deaths due to COVID-19 in the top 10 high social developed neighborhoods and top 10 most populous favelas in RJ to determine the case-fatality rate (CFR) and compare these two different realities. Results: CFR was significatively higher in poverty areas of RJ, reaching a mean of 9.08% in the most populous favelas and a mean of 4.87% in the socially developed neighborhoods. Conclusions: The social mitigation measures adopted in RJ have benefited only smaller portions of the population, excluding needy communities.

The pathophysiology of accelerated atherosclerosis in people living with Human Immunofediciency virus (HIV) is complex. Coronary artery disease (CAD) has become an important cause of mortality in these patients. ⋯ We report a case of a 51-year-old male undergoing antiretroviral therapy who was admitted for acute coronary syndrome. He had severe coronary artery disease that involved difficult management.

Elevated Procalcitonin Is Positively Associated with the Severity of COVID-19: A Meta-Analysis Based on 10 Cohort Studies.
Background and Objectives: Procalcitonin (PCT) is positively associated with the severity of COVID-19 (including severe, critical, or fatal outcomes), but some of the confounding factors are not considered. The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the adjusted relationship between elevated procalcitonin on admission and the severity of COVID-19. Materials and Methods: We searched 1805 articles from PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases up to 2 April 2021. ⋯ Subgroup analysis revealed heterogeneity between studies and sensitivity analysis showed that the results were robust. There was no evidence of publication bias by Egger's test (p = 0.106). Conclusions: Higher procalcitonin is positively associated with the severity of COVID-19, which is a potential biomarker to evaluate the severity of COVID-19 and predict the prognosis.
