Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of bone turnover markers, namely the N-terminal cross-linking telopeptide (NTx) and alpha C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen (α-CTx), in detecting bone metastasis (bone-only) in breast cancer (BC) patients, as well as to determine whether this effect is related to changes in bone mineral density (BMD). Materials and Methods: The participants in this study comprised 30 postmenopausal BC patients with bone metastases (age range: 59.56 ± 9.02), 20 postmenopausal BC patients without bone metastases (age range: 55.30 ± 11.55), and 20 healthy postmenopausal female controls (age range: 55.55 ± 5.85). Bone turnover markers (serum NTx and urine α-CTx) were measured using the ELISA method. ⋯ Conclusions: We found that alterations in bone turnover could be detected by using the values of urine α-CTx while differentiating BC patients with metastasis from BC patients without metastasis. Using the biochemical markers of bone turnover and BMD together would be pertinent for determining the level of metastasis present and examining the efficiency of bone density preservation therapy. Ideally, BMD measurement would be evaluated together with biochemical markers.

Youth-onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) represents a major burden worldwide. In the last decades, the prevalence of T2DM became higher than that of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), helped by the increasing rate of childhood obesity. The highest prevalence rates of youth-onset T2DM are recorded in China (520 cases/100,000) and in the United States (212 cases/100,000), and the numbers are still increasing. ⋯ Juvenile T2DM nephropathy occurs earlier in life compared to T1DM-related nephropathy in children or T2DM-related nephropathy in adult. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is T2DM major long term microvascular complication. This review summarizes the main mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the DKD in young population and the recent evolution of treatment, in order to reduce the risk of DKD progression.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the change of bone height following treatment of human intrabony defects with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with bone grafting or access flap alone by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Materials and methods: This study was conducted as a retrospective longitudinal study. In this study, a total of 2281 teeth sites were included: the GTR group had 1210 sites, and the Flap group had 1071 sites. ⋯ In terms of oral position, the #14-17, #34-37, and #44-47 subgroups of the GTR group showed higher levels of bone heights than those of the Flap group. Conclusions. The results of this study indicated that the GTR procedure offers the additional benefit of higher bone heights than the Flap procedure does.

While the world faces an unprecedented situation with the pandemic, other chronic diseases such as chronic pain continue to run their course. The social distancing and restrictive displacement imposed by the pandemic situation represents a new barrier to access to pain management and tends to reinforce chronification process. ⋯ Although Reiki administered by a practitioner has shown promising results to reduce pain and psychological distress, and to improve quality of life, self-Reiki practice needs evidence-based medicine to be disseminated. Overall, self-Reiki could bring positive results in addition to, and without interfering with, conventional medicine approaches in patients experienced chronic pain.

Urosepsis is a very serious condition with a high mortality rate. The immune response is in the center of pathophysiology. The therapeutic management of these patients includes surgical treatment of the source of infection, antibiotic therapy and life support. ⋯ An imbalance of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines produced during sepsis plays an important role in pathogenesis. The study of cytokines in sepsis has important implications for understanding pathophysiology and for development of other therapeutic solutions. If not treated adequately, urosepsis may lead to serious septic complications and organ sequelae, even to a lethal outcome.
