Background and Objectives: Anemia is the most frequent complication of inflammatory bowel diseases. Clinically, anemia can affect important quality-of-life (QoL) components, such as exercise capacity, cognitive function, and the ability to carry out social activities. The disease activity has a significant impact on QoL, mainly due to clinical manifestations, which are more severe during the periods of disease activity. ⋯ Conclusions: Anemia has high prevalence in the CD in northeastern region of Romania. Anemia was more common in female patients, in patients undergoing corticosteroid treatment, and in those with active disease. Both anemia and disease activity had a strong negative and independent impact on QoL.

Background and Objectives: This study was conducted to determine whether self-control and emotions could influence patients' physical ability and functional recovery after stroke. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four patients within eight weeks after a stroke were included in this study (age: 54.04 ± 10.31; days after stroke: 42.66 ± 8.84). The subjects participated in tests at the baseline, four weeks later, and eight weeks later. ⋯ A significant correlation was noted between the emotion and physical variables in stroke patients. The self-control level was significantly associated with the change in the physical variables in stroke patients over time. Conclusions: The self-control level was positively related to the increases in functional recovery of stroke patients with time, while the emotions were related more to the physical abilities.

Background and Objectives: One of the most frequently mutated oncogenes in cancer belongs to the Ras family of proto-oncogenes, which encode distinct key signaling events. RAS gain-of-function mutations are present in ~30% of all human cancers, with KRAS being the most frequently mutated isoform showing alterations in different cancer types including lung cancer. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of KRAS mutations, and concomitant mutations, in advanced non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma patients. ⋯ Interestingly, 33.3% of the mutant KRAS samples showed other mutations simultaneously. Conclusions: This study revealed the presence of rare KRAS concomitant mutations in advanced lung adenocarcinoma patients. Further investigation on the importance of these genomic alterations in patient prognosis and treatment response is warranted.

Muscle injuries occur frequently in athletes, accounting for more than one-third of sport-related trauma. Athletes most affected by these injuries are those practicing football and track and field, with hamstrings and gastrocnemius-soleus as the mainly involved sites. Muscle injuries lead to loss of competitions, long recovery times and risk of re-injury with a consequent increase of the management costs. ⋯ In this context, ultrasound imaging is widely used for diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders because of several advantages including absence of radiation, portability, good spatial resolution, and the ability to perform dynamic tests. The aim of this review is to address the role of US in the evaluation of athletes with muscle injuries. US may play a pivotal role for the management of sport-related muscle injuries because it is fast and relatively cheap, allowing dynamic muscle assessment and time series evaluation of the healing process.

Background and Objectives: The main reason for Newborn screening (NBS) for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is to prevent adrenal insufficiency that can lead to life-threatening conditions. On the other hand, screening programs are not always sensitive and effective enough to detect the disease. We aimed to evaluate impact of the national NBS on the clinical presentation of patients with CAH in Lithuania. ⋯ Significant differences were found in weight at diagnosis between the groups (-1.67 ± 1.12 SDS versus 0.046 ± 1.01 SDS of unscreened and screened patients respectively, p = 0.001). Conclusions: The sensitivity and specificity of NBS for CAH program were 100%, but positive predictive value-only 4%. Weight loss was significantly lower and the weight SDS at diagnosis was significantly higher in the group of screened patients.
