The early diagnosis of hepatic steatosis is important. No study has assessed hepatic fat quantification by using low-dose dual-energy computed tomography (CT). We assessed the accuracy of hepatic fat quantification using the multi-material decomposition (MMD) algorithm with low-dose non-contrast material-enhanced dual-energy CT. ⋯ The ROC curve analysis demonstrated that FVF ≥ 4.61% was the optimal cutoff for fatty liver. With this cutoff value for diagnosing the fatty liver on low-dose dual-energy CT, the sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve were 90%, 100%, and 0.987, respectively. The MMD algorithm using low-dose non-contrast material-enhanced dual-energy CT is feasible for quantifying hepatic fat.

Background and Objectives: Aquaporins are a family of water channel proteins. In this study, the renal and intrapulmonary expression of aquaporin-5 (AQP5) was examined in forensic autopsy cases to evaluate it as a drowning marker and to differentiate between freshwater drowning and saltwater drowning. Materials and Methods: Cases were classified into three groups: freshwater drowning (FWD), saltwater drowning (SWD), and controls (CTR). ⋯ Conclusions: These observations suggest that AQP5 expression in alveolar cells was suppressed by hypotonic water to prevent hemodilution. Moreover, it is possible to hypothesize that in the kidney, with the appearance of hypo-osmotic plasma, AQP5 is hypo-expressed, as a vital reaction, to regulate the renal reabsorption of water. In conclusion, the analysis of renal and intrapulmonary AQP5 expression would be forensically useful for differentiation between FWD and SWD, or between FWD and death due to other causes.

The Effect of Laser Micro Grooved Platform Switched Implants and Abutments on Early Crestal Bone Levels and Peri-Implant Soft Tissues Post 1 Year Loading among Diabetic Patients-A Controlled Clinical Trial.
Background and Objectives: The study aimed to compare the mean crestal bone level (CBL) and peri-implant soft tissue parameters in laser micro-grooved (LMG) platform switched implants and abutments (I&A) post 1 year of functional loading among non-diabetic and type II diabetic individuals. Materials and methods: Patients with an edentulous site having minimum bone height and width of ≥13 mm and ≥6 mm, respectively, were divided into two groups: (i) Non-diabetic-8 (control) and (ii) diabetic-8 (test). LMG Implants were placed and loaded immediately with a provisional prosthesis. ⋯ The peri-implant soft tissue parameters showed no significant difference between the groups. ISQ level between both groups did not reveal any significant changes (p ≤ 0.92), and ISR was 100%. Conclusions: LMG Implants resulted in minimal and comparable early crestal bone loss and soft tissue changes post 1 year of functional loading in moderately controlled diabetic and non-diabetic individuals, suggesting that this could be a reliable system for use in systemically compromised individuals.

Background and Objectives: Although human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major etiology of cervical and anogenital cancers, whether it is associated with colorectal carcinogenesis is yet undetermined. Materials and Methods: The longitudinal association of HPV infection with colorectal cancer (CRC) was evaluated using 2000-2013 data from a nationwide Taiwanese claims database. In this retrospective cohort study, 358 patients with primary HPV diagnoses (HPV-infected cohort) and 1432 patients without such a diagnosis (HPV-uninfected cohort) were recruited between 2000 and 2006. ⋯ Furthermore, the significant HPV-CRC risk association was evident in both sexes. Conclusions: This population-based cohort study reveals longitudinal evidence that HPV is associated with an increased risk of CRC. Further studies are required to verify the role of HPV in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Monkeypox (MPX) is a zoonotic infection caused by an orthopoxvirus that is endemic to Central and Western Africa. The MPX virus is a part of the same family of viruses as the variola virus, which causes smallpox. Since May 2022, there has been a global increase in the incidence of MPX infections in multiple countries where the illness is not usually prevalent. ⋯ This approach should be multimodal and include non-pharmacological therapies alongside pharmacological approaches. Health care professionals should be aware of available alternatives when first choice analgesic therapies fail. Protocols for identification of pain type and prolonged monitoring of clinical status should be implemented to improve patient well-being during acute infection, but also prevent chronic nociceptive syndromes.
