Background and Objectives: Studies examining the importance of inflammatory markers before treatment as prognosticators of OSCC are available, but information on post-therapy inflammatory markers and their prognostic significance is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic abilities of pre- and post-treatment inflammatory markers in patients with OSCC. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective analysis, information on 151 OSCC patients' socio-demographic, clinico-pathological, recurrence, metastasis, and survival data were gathered from clinical records. ⋯ For DFS, high pre-treatment SII (HR 2.59, 95%CI 1.50, 4.48) and high post-treatment PLC (HR 1.92, 95%CI 1.11, 3.32) and PLR (HR 3.44, 95%CI 1.98, 5.07) were associated with increased mortality. The fitness of the OS and DFS stepwise Cox regression models were proven with a time-dependent AUC of 0.8787 and 0.8502, respectively. Conclusions: High pre-treatment levels of LMR and SII and high post-treatment levels of PLC and PLR are independent predictors of a poor prognosis for patients with OSCC.

Background and Objectives: Nowadays, every tenth adult in the world suffers from diabetes mellitus (DM). Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common microvascular complication of type 2 DM (T2DM) and a leading cause of acquired blindness in middle-aged individuals in many countries. Previous studies have identified associations of several gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to microvascular complications of DM in various worldwide populations. ⋯ The association was also observed in the subset of Kazakhs. Conclusions: This study shows that the BglII polymorphism in the ITGA2 gene can be associated with T2DM but not with DR. According to our data, the risk allele for diabetes is the wild BglII- allele, and not the minor BglII+, which is considered as risky for DR.

Background and Objectives: The strategy of revascularization may be constrained in patients with insufficient bypass grafts and with increased risk of wound healing disorders. Among those with complex left-sided double-vessel disease in whom a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), as well as the surgical procedure of minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting via left minithoracotomy (MICS CABG), is not a treatment option, CABG using the left internal mammary artery as a T-graft with itself may be an effective treatment strategy. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the data from patients treated in Cologne and Tuebingen from 2019 to 2022. ⋯ There was no 30-day mortality within the cohort. Conclusions: Patients requiring surgical myocardial revascularization due to complex two-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD) can be easily managed with LIMA alone, despite an elevated Fowler score and a promising outcome. A prospective study needs to be conducted, as well as longer term surveillance, to substantiate and benchmark the long-term results, as well as the patency rates.

Background and Objectives: Stigma and lack of acceptance in society might have detrimental effects on the quality of life of patients with psoriasis, sometimes being comparable with other chronic diseases and conditions that affect the appearance of a patient, such as burns. Therefore, we surveyed our patients diagnosed with psoriasis to determine the implications of misinformation and stigma for their quality of life, depression, and coping strategies stratified by different age categories. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed for a sample size of a minimum of 45 patients considering a prevalence of psoriasis of 2-3% in the general population. ⋯ In the 30- to 50-year-old group, the strongest correlations were with the feeling of being stigmatized (rho = 0.376), having sexual difficulties (rho = 0.367) and disengagement coping style (rho = 273). Conclusions: While the respondents are reasonably well-informed regarding psoriasis, a degree of stigma remains, likely due to involuntary emotional responses such as repulsion and embarrassment. It is essential to establish initiatives aimed at educating the general public, raising awareness, and establishing a more tolerant social environment for psoriasis patients.

Background and objectives: The Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body, is vulnerable to injury because of its limited blood supply and the combination of forces to which it is subjected. Given the relevance of the Achilles tendon in the proper function of the foot and ankle, the primary goal of the present study was to use a holistic approach for a comprehensive evaluation of Achilles tendon reconstruction results on multiple levels. Materials and Methods: The study was designed in the following way: 30 patients with partial or total Achilles tendon tears were subjected to the minimally invasive Achilles tendon reconstruction. ⋯ However, most of the muscle strength parameters of the operated limbs were already comparable to non-operated ones 12 months after the surgery and were comparable between two evaluation times. Conclusions: The overall results of this extensive evaluation are highly satisfactory and patients returned to their normal physical activity. From a medical point of view, it is assumed that the healing process is completed 12 months after the surgery, however, importantly, our results indicate that we should consider the healing process and the rehabilitation process separately.
