Postpartum Depression Prevalence and Associated Factors: An Observational Study in Saudi Arabia.
Background and Objectives: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a psychological disorder in women who recently gave birth. It can present as mild to severe depression. Multiple studies across the globe have used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale to reveal the factors that affect the prevalence of PPD. ⋯ PPD affects not only the health of the mother but also that of her baby and other family members. Our results showed that the history of diagnosed depression, lower education status, unemployment, and delivery disposition of C-sections were independent predictors of PPD development. Raising awareness and controlling the vulnerable factors could decrease the high risk of its effects.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the potential risk factors for severe postoperative complications after oncologic right colectomy. Materials and Methods: All consecutive patients with right colon cancer who underwent right colectomy in our department between 2016 and 2021 were retrospectively included in this study. The Clavien-Dindo grading system was used to evaluate postoperative complications. ⋯ Univariate analysis showed the following as risk factors for postoperative severe complications: Charlson score, lack of mechanical bowel preparation, level of preoperative proteins, blood transfusions, and degree of urgency (elective/emergency right colectomy). In the logistic binary regression, the Charlson score (OR = 1.931, 95% CI = 1.077-3.463, p = 0.025) and preoperative protein level (OR = 0.049, 95% CI = 0.006-0.433, p = 0.007) were found to be independent risk factors for postoperative severe complications. Conclusions: Severe complications after oncologic right colectomy are associated with a low preoperative protein level and a higher Charlson comorbidity index.

Background and Objectives: Inappropriate antibiotic usage in hospitalized patients contributes to microbial resistance. Our study aimed to examine the incidence of clinical bacterial isolates and their antibiotic resistance burden among critically ill patients in different hospital units. Materials and Methods: A single-centered cross-sectional study was conducted in a 120-bed tertiary care hospital that included 221 critically ill patients with hospital-acquired infections. ⋯ Antibiotic sensitivity testing showed that polymyxin B was the most effective antibiotic against Gram-negative bacteria, whereas vancomycin and linezolid were the most active antibiotics against Gram-positive pathogens. Moreover, 7% of the Gram-negative bacteria isolated from different units showed positive production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). Conclusions: The current study describes the high antibiotic resistance patterns in various hospital units that need extra legislation to prevent healthcare providers from misprescription and overuse of antibiotics.

Background and Objectives: Abdominal trauma among severely injured patients with an injury severity score (ISS) of 16 and above can lead to potentially life-threatening injuries that might need immediate surgical intervention. Traumatic injuries to the diaphragm (TID) are a challenging condition often accompanied by other injuries in the thoracoabdominal region. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the occurrence and clinical course of TID among severely injured patients treated at our center between 2008 and 2019 and compared them to other groups of severely injured patients without TID. ⋯ A comparison to 191 patients that required laparotomy for abdominal injuries other than TID revealed significantly higher rates of concomitant injuries to several abdominal organs among patients suffering from TID. Compared to all other severely injured patients treated in the same period (n = 1377), patients suffering from TID had a significantly higher median ISS and a longer mean duration of hospital stay. Conclusions: Our findings show that TID can be seen as an indicator of particularly severe thoracoabdominal trauma that requires increased attention from the treatment team so as not to miss relevant concomitant injuries that require immediate intervention.

Root repair can prevent osteoarthritis (OA) by restoring hoop tension in medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs). This study aims to investigate bone marrow edema (BME) lesions known to be associated with OA following MMPRTs. Methods: Thirty patients with transtibial pull-out repair were recruited. ⋯ Meniscal extrusion was significantly reduced in group two, whereas extrusion was significantly progressed in group three. Conclusion: Patients with worsened BME lesions showed less favorable outcomes than other patients. A decrease in meniscal extrusion can have a positive effect on BME lesions after root repair.
