Background and Objectives: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has become the leading indication for liver transplantation in many countries, with a growing rate in the Western world. NASH patients are older and share a higher risk of comorbidities and cancer than patients with viral and/or alcoholic etiologies. The aims of this study were to evaluate waiting list (WL) registration and liver transplantation rates in patients with NASH-related cirrhosis at Padua University Hospital in the last fifteen years (1.2006-6.2020) and to compare clinical characteristics and indications for liver transplantation between patients with and without NASH, as well as the WL survival and post-transplant outcome. ⋯ NASH patients were older than non-NASH ones (mean ± SD age 59 ± 9 vs. 56 ± 9 years; p < 0.01), whereas no difference was found in gender or Child-Pugh of the model for end-stage liver disease score at WL registration. A majority (60.9%) of NASH patients underwent liver transplantation, showing 1-, 5- and 10-y post-transplant survivals of 86%, 73% and 60%, respectively. Conclusion: NASH cirrhosis has become a rapidly growing indication for liver transplantation at our center, both for HCC and decompensated disease, with good post-transplant survival.

Background and Objectives: Loss of smell is one of the strongest predictors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and can persist long after other symptoms have resolved. "Long" cases (>28 days) of smell dysfunction present future challenges to medical and dental professionals, as there is a lack of evidence on the causes and any exacerbating or relieving factors. This study aimed to explore the persistence of COVID-19-induced smell loss and association with physical, lifestyle and oral health factors. Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey of 235 participants. ⋯ Use of floss was the only modifiable factor associated with rapid recovery of smell loss. As 87% of cases resolve within 30 days, future studies may benefit from targeted recruitment of individuals experiencing prolonged sense loss. This would increase statistical confidence when declaring no association with the other factors assessed, avoiding type II errors.

Trend of Galectin-3 Levels in Patients with Non-ST-Elevation and ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction.
Background and Objectives: Given the fact that galectin-3 has a predictive significance on the development of myocardial dysfunction after acute myocardial infarction, the aim of our study was to examine potential factors that could be important for the dynamics of the concentration of this biomarker in the early postinfarction period. Materials and Methods: This study included 89 patients with a diagnosis of stable angina pectoris (SAP) or the first non-ST elevation (NSTEMI) or ST-elevation (STEMI) myocardial infarction, who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The study group included 23 patients with the first NSTEMI and 42 patients with STEMI, while the control group consisted of 24 patients with SAP hospitalized for elective PCI without a previous MI. ⋯ Statistically significantly higher values of C-reactive protein were established in STEMI compared to SAP (p < 0.01) or NSTEMI (p < 0.001), whereas WBC count was significantly lower in SAP than in STEMI (p < 0.001) and NSTEMI (p < 0.01) group. Although there were no statistically significant differences in measured galectin-3 concentrations between the examined groups on days 1, 5, and 30 after PCI, HTA, triglyceride level, LA size, treatment with trimetazidine and long-acting nitrates, as well as percentage of LM stenosis and E/A ratio were identified as independent predictors of galectin-3 concentration. Conclusions: In the post-MI period, very early values of galectin-3 correlate mostly with atherosclerosis factors, while on day 30 this biomarker correlates with diastolic dysfunction and "announces" left ventricular remodeling.

Background: Hyperkalemia is an electrolyte disorder frequently encountered in the emergency department. There are few studies on seasonal variation in the prevalence of hyperkalemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the seasonal changes in the prevalence of hyperkalemia in the emergency department. ⋯ The prevalence of hyperkalemia was highest in winter, followed by spring, autumn, and summer in patients with preserved renal function (p < 0.001) and those with reduced renal function (p < 0.001). There was a linear correlation between monthly weather temperature and the prevalence of hyperkalemia in patients with preserved renal function (r = -0.392; p < 0.001) and those with reduced renal function (r = -0.487; p < 0.001). Conclusions: we found that the prevalence of hyperkalemia was significantly higher in winter for both patients with preserved renal function and those with reduced renal function.

The pathogeneses of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and age-related hearing impairment are not yet fully understood. If AMD and age-related hearing impairment are correlated, the cause of both may be a result of a common vulnerability. The aim of this study was to assess the interrelation between age-related macular degeneration and age-related hearing loss.
