Background and Objectives: Severe non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding is a life-threatening condition with complicated treatment if endoscopic therapy fails. In such cases, transcatheter arterial embolization is recommended. The technical and clinical effects of this technique were analyzed in this group of patients, as well as its complication rate and 30-day mortality. ⋯ Mortality was significantly higher in the group of patients with re-bleeding (p = 0.044). Conclusions: Transcatheter arterial embolization is a mini-invasive method with high technical success in patients with endoscopically untreatable gastrointestinal bleeding; it is also suitable for high-risk cases. Mortality (to a significant extent) depends on the occurrence of re-bleeding and the patient's comorbidities.

Background and Objectives: This study evaluated and compared the cognitive function (CF) and aerobic fitness (AF) of 15 normal-weight (NW) and 15 overweight (OW) children, aged 6−12 years. In addition, the relationship between CF and AF was evaluated. Materials and Methods: The ANAM4 battery was used to evaluate CF, and a constant treadmill walking exercise (6 km/h for 6 min) and a progressive treadmill exercise (modified Balke test) were used to assess pulmonary oxygen uptake (VO2). ⋯ The VO2 max was higher and the time constant of VO2 kinetics was shorter in NW children (56.23 ± 3.53 mL/kg/min and 21.73 ± 1.57 s, respectively) than in OW children (45.84 ± 1.89 mL/kg/min and 33.46 ± 2.9 s, respectively; p < 0.05). Conclusion: The OW children aged 6−12 years demonstrated poorer CF and lower AF than their NW peers. An association between AF and CF indicators was identified in both groups.

Venous thromboembolism (comprising deep venous thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism) is a common disease, often of multifactorial cause. Focal iliac artery aneurysms are relatively rare, and only a few reports exist in the literature describing patients with venous thromboembolism resulting from venous floe disruption due to iliac artery aneurysm. Thus, we report a case of a 65-year-old male presenting with pulmonary embolism and bilateral deep vein thrombosis associated with a contained rupture of the right common iliac artery aneurysm.

Background and objectives: Although minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MPCNL) has demonstrated its efficacy, complete stone clearance was not always achieved, necessitating a second procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with residual stone rate, operative duration, complications, and hospital stay, in order to develop algorithms for pre-operative prognosis and planning. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study involved 163 Bulgarian patients who underwent MPCNL with Holmium: YAG lithotripsy for the treatment of kidney stones. ⋯ Conclusions: Staghorn stones and stones in more than one location showed the strongest association with residual stone rate. Staghorn stones and larger volume were linked with a longer operative duration. Hydronephrosis increased the risk of complications and longer hospitalization.

Dyspnea, shortness of breath, and chest pain are frequent symptoms of post-COVID syndrome (PCS). These symptoms are unrelated to organ damage in most patients after mild acute COVID infection. Hyperventilation has been identified as a cause of exercise-induced dyspnea in PCS. ⋯ High intracellular sodium has unfavorable effects on mitochondrial calcium and metabolism via sodium-calcium-exchangers (NCX). Mitochondrial calcium overload by high intracellular sodium reversing the transport mode of NCX to import calcium is a key driver for fatigue and chronification. Prevention of hyperventilation has a therapeutic potential by keeping intracellular sodium below the threshold where calcium overload occurs.
