Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis and anemia are prevalent among chronic kidney disease stage 5D (CKD stage 5D) patients. Osteoblasts are known as the niche cells of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and stimulate HSCs to form blood-cell lineages within bone marrow microenvironments. We hypothesized that an inverse correlation may exist between mean corpuscular volume (MCV), a surrogate for ineffective hematopoiesis, and bone mineral density (BMD) in the CKD stage 5D population. ⋯ Conclusions: The present study found significant inverse correlations between MCV and BMD at specific body locations in patients on dialysis. A decreased T-score was also found to be associated with macrocytosis after adjustments for confounding variables. However, direct evidence for the causative etiology was lacking.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the process and morphology of thoracic and lumbosacral bone fusion in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) who underwent circumferential minimally invasive spine surgery (CMIS) by lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) and percutaneous pedicle screws (PPSs) without bone grafting in the thoracic spine and who have risk factors for bone fusion failure in the thoracic spine. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 61 patients with spinal deformities (46 women and 15 men) who underwent CMIS with LLIF and PPSs at our hospital after 2016 and completed a 3-year postoperative follow-up. The rate and morphology of bone fusion and rod fracture rate in the thoracic and lumbosacral vertebrae were evaluated. ⋯ Screw loosening in the thoracic vertebrae was significantly higher in the bone fusion failure group, while no significant differences were observed in the spinopelvic parameters, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and rate of proximal junctional kyphosis and rod fractures. Type N vertebral body condition and screw loosening were identified as risk factors for spontaneous bone fusion failure in the thoracic spine. Conclusion: This study indicated that spontaneous bone fusion is likely to be obtained without screw loosening, and even if bone fusion is not obtained, there is no effect on clinical results with the mid-term (3-year) results of CMIS without bone grafting in the thoracic spine.

Deciphering the Role of the rs2651899, rs10166942, and rs11172113 Polymorphisms in Migraine: A Meta-Analysis.
The genetic basis of migraine is rather complex. The rs2651899 in the PR/SET domain 16 (PRDM16) gene, the rs10166942 near the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8 (TRPM8) gene, and the rs11172113 in the LDL receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) gene, have been associated with migraine in a genome-wide association study (GWAS). However, data from subsequent studies examining the role of these variants and their relationship with migraine remain inconclusive. ⋯ No association was detected for the rs11172113. The rs2651899 and the rs10166942 have an effect on migraine. Larger studies are needed to dissect the role of these variants in migraine.

Cardiovascular Disorder after Cardiotoxic Non-Hodking's Lymphoma Treatment: A Case Report.
The non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are a diverse group of lymphoid neoplasms that collectively rank fifth in cancer incidence and mortality. Patients treated with mediastinal radiotherapy and/or anthracycline-containing chemotherapy are known to have increased risks of coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, and heart failure. This may be the result of cancer treatment cardiotoxicity or may be due to accelerated development of cardiovascular disease. ⋯ Coronary angiography showed diffuse three-vessel coronary artery disease. The patient was referred for surgical treatment. Aortic valve replacement, coronary artery bypass grafting and pericardiectomy were successfully performed, symptoms of heart failure reduced.

Background and Objective: The aim of this review was to analyze the existing literature and investigate the outcomes or complications of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) combined with indirect decompression for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DS). Materials and Methods: A database search algorithm was used to query MEDLINE, COCHRANE, and EMBASE to identify the literature reporting LLIF with indirect decompression for DS between January 2010 and December 2021. Improvements in outcome measures and complication rates were pooled and tested for significance. ⋯ Post-operative complications occurred in 5-40% of patients with thigh symptoms, such as anterior thigh numbness, dysesthesia, discomfort, pain, and sensory deficits. Conclusions: Indirect decompression by LLIF for DS is an effective method for improving pain and dysfunction with less surgical invasion. In addition, it has the effect of significantly improving disc height, foraminal height and area, and segmental lordosis on radiological outcomes compared to the posterior approach.
