Background and Objectives: After burns, social reintegration is a primary long-term objective. At the same time, substance-abuse disorders are more common in burn patients. The aim of this study was to assess prevalence of substance abuse pre- and postburn as well as living situation and relationship status relative to patient-reported health-related quality of life (HRQoL). ⋯ Conclusions: HRQoL is better in men than in women after burn injury. A slight decrease in substance abuse postburn was noted. The connection between HRQoL and substance abuse after burn injuries needs to be investigated further in the future.

Background and Objectives: The treadmill test (TMT) is a predictive tool for myocardial ischemia. Recently, exercise-provoked ventricular premature contracture (VPC) during TMT was shown to have a relation with coronary artery disease and cardiovascular mortality. Therefore, we evaluate clinical correlates of exercise-provoked VPC and compare the predictive power for myocardial ischemia and cardiovascular events. ⋯ Among the 20 patients showing recovery phase VPC, 2 (10.0%) underwent revascularization after TMT. In multivariable analysis, recovery phase VPC was associated with revascularization (odds ratio 9.381, 1.144-76.948) considering age, sex, BMI, and TMT result. Conclusion: VPC during the treadmill test was a useful predictor of myocardial ischemia in this study.

Background and objectives: Anti-citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA), a characteristic antibody detected in rheumatoid arthritis, could be linked to antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) via the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps. We investigated the rate of ACPA positivity in patients with AAV and evaluated the association of ACPAs with their clinical features and outcomes. Materials and Methods: A total of 168 AAV patients with both ACPA and ANCA results at diagnosis were identified. ⋯ Finally, the cumulative ILD-free survival rates were comparable between ACPA-positive and ACPA-negative AAV patients. Conclusions: The detection of ACPA expression is not uncommon in AAV. However, the presence of ACPA did not influence patients' basal characteristics and outcomes, suggesting that further exploration of the role of this antibody is needed in patients with AAV.

Background: Patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) have a significantly better treatment response and overall survival (OS) rates than non-HPV-associated OPSCC. Objectives: We conducted the present study to further characterize the interplay between lifestyle risk factors, which are not only HPV status, but also smoking history and alcohol consumption, and the OS to optimize the treatment of patients with OPSCC. Materials and Methods: Between January 2006 and December 2013, 94 patients newly diagnosed with OPSCC were treated with curative intent at Aichi Cancer Center Hospital (Nagoya, Japan). ⋯ In the multivariate analysis, adjusted for the clinical stage, smoking history, alcohol consumption, HPV status, and a smoking history of >10 pack-years was an independent negative prognostic factor for the OS among patients with OPSCC (HR: 10.4, 95 %CI: 1.34−80.6, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Smoking is a very important negative prognostic factor even in cases of HPV-associated OPSCC. The impact of smoking needs to be reaffirmed when deciding on treatment plans and de-escalation trials in OPSCC, even in cases of HPV-associated OPSCC.

The RANKL-GLYC study aims to explore the impact of the rapid correction of chronic hyperglycemia on the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) and its antagonist osteoprotegerin (OPG). RANKL and OPG are considered the main factors in the pathophysiology of Charcot neuroarthropathy, a devastating complication of the joints that remains poorly understood. The study began recruiting patients in September 2021 and ends in June 2022; the final study results are scheduled for January 2023.
