Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the characteristics of macular neovascularization (MNV) with undetectable flow on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in neovascular age related macular degeneration (nAMD), and compare them with the characteristics of detectable MNV. Materials and Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of nAMD who underwent dye imaging and OCTA in the same day were included and divided into two groups: undetectable and detectable flow on OCTA. Three OCTA devices were used, two with spectral-domain technology (AngioVue, RTVue 100xAvanti, Optovue, Freemont, CA, USA and Heidelberg OCT2 Beta Angiography Module, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) and one swept-source OCTA (PlexElite 9000; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA, USA). ⋯ For AngioVue, PED Height and absence of hemorrhage explained 67.9% of undetectability. Conclusions: In this study, we found a global sensitivity of 83.49% for the three OCTA devices combined, with a range from 55.5% to 96.26% depending on the segmentation and OCTA device. This means that undetectable/undetected MNV can represent up to 45% of the examinations, eventually misdiagnosing choroidal neovascularization for 1 out every 2 patients.

Effect of Dentin-Disinfection Chemicals on Shear Bond Strength and Microhardness of Resin-Infiltrated Human Dentin in Different Adhesive Protocols.
Background and Objectives: Bacteria and its remnants beneath the restorations predispose the tooth to secondary caries and pulpal pathology. Hence, various chemical antibacterial agents are suggested to disinfect the prepared tooth structure before the definitive restorative procedure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of chemical disinfectant solutions on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) and microhardness of total-etch and self-etch resin-infiltrated human dentin. ⋯ The 5.25% NaOCl and 17% EDTA significantly compromised the microhardness of the dentin substrate. Meanwhile, 10% PVI surface treatment resulted in a substantial reduction in µSBS between composite and dentin. Conclusions: CHX with preservation of bonding to dentin and insignificant negative effect on dentin microhardness is a safe option for tooth disinfection.

Comparative Genotypic Analysis of RAPD and RFLP Markers for Molecular Variation Detection of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Clinical Isolates.
Background and Objectives: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates are associated with various diseases ranged from mild superficial impairments to invasive infections. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods namely, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the coa gene and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), to determine the genetic diversity of MRSA isolates. Materials and Methods: A total of 37 MRSA isolates were conventionally identified depending on their biochemical and microbiological culture characteristics. ⋯ Additionally, the PCR-based RAPD analysis showed variable bands number with size range of approximately 130 bp to 4 kbp, which indicated the genetic variation of the tested MRSA isolates as it created 36 variable RAPD banding profiles. Conclusions: coa gene AluI enzymatic restriction sites, amongst the tested MRSA isolates, certify their genetic variation on the basis of the accurate but complicated and relatively expensive coa gene-based RFLP. Conversely, the results verified the excellent ability of the simple and cost-effective PCR-based RAPD analysis to discriminate between MRSA isolates without any preface data about the genome.

Background and Objectives: The accessory maxillary ostium (AMO) can interfere with ventilation and drainage of the maxillary sinus, and therefore the importance of evaluating the anatomical features of the AMO has been emphasized. This study aimed to evaluate anatomical characteristics of the AMO together with the natural ostium (NO) using three-dimensional (3D) analysis and to assess the relationship between the AMO and maxillary sinus pathologies. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 394 sinuses in 197 patients. ⋯ The mean horizontal and vertical dimensions were 5.9 mm and 4.6 mm for the NO and 2.8 mm and 3.0 mm for the AMO. We detected a significant association between the presence of the AMO and the mucosal thickening (p = 0.029). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that, although the AMO and NO are mostly located in positions that do not limit sinus-related surgeries, such as maxillary sinus floor augmentation, the AMO and NO are also found in lower positions, which may be a detriment to the postoperative physiological function of the maxillary sinus and affect treatment outcomes.

Background and Objectives: The gut microbiota has been increasingly recognized as a relevant factor associated with metabolic diseases. However, directly measuring the microbiota composition is a limiting factor for several studies. Therefore, using genetic variables as proxies for the microbiota composition is an important issue. ⋯ In addition, some Mi-RSNPs and adherence to Mediterranean diet interactions were detected. Lastly, the formal Mendelian randomization analysis suggested combined effects. Conclusions: Although the use of Mi-RSNPs as proxies of the microbiome is still in its infancy, and although this is the first study analyzing such associations with fasting plasma glucose and type 2 diabetes in a Mediterranean population, some interesting associations, as well as modulations, with adherence to the Mediterranean diet were detected in these high-cardiovascular-risk subjects, eliciting new hypotheses.
