Background and Objectives: The gene NKX3.2 plays a role in determining cell fate during development, and mutations of NKX3.2 have been studied in relation to human skeletal diseases. However, due to the lack of studies on the link between NKX3.2 and cancer, we aimed to provide insights into NKX3.2 as a new prognostic biomarker for liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC). Materials and Methods: The clinical significance of LIHC was investigated using open gene expression databases. ⋯ Conclusions: High NKX3.2 expression may induce poorer prognosis in LIHC. In addition, these findings can be used as basic data due to the lack of available related research. However, further in vivo studies are essential to gain a deeper understanding of the biological role of NKX3.2 in LIHC and its potential implications for cancer development and progression.

Background and Objectives: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease in the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by specific microorganisms or groups of microorganisms. P. gingivalis bacterium is the keystone pathogen in periodontitis, so even at low concentrations, it has a considerable influence on the oral community. Antimicrobials and antiplaque agents can be used as adjunctive therapy for periodontitis treatment. ⋯ In vitro, KGM had antibacterial activity against P. gingivalis with better bacteriostatic (15-23%) than bactericidal (11-20%) ability, proven by its ability to inhibit P. gingivalis proliferation. Conclusions: KGM can be considered to have the potential as an antibacterial agent to prevent periodontitis. The prevention of periodontitis may improve patient well-being and human quality of life.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of thymoquinone (TMQ) treatment in osteonecrotic rats by evaluating protein levels, osteonecrosis (ON) levels, fatty acid degeneration, oxidative status, and plasma levels of Urotensin-II (U-II) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β1). Materials and Methods: 40 weight-matched adult male Wistar rats were grouped as control (n = 10), methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) (n = 10), thymoquinone (TMQ) (n = 10), and MPA + TMQ (n = 10). To induce ON, 15-week-old animals were subcutaneously injected with MPA at a dose of 15 mg/kg twice weekly for 2 weeks. ⋯ Furthermore, TGF-β1 (293.50 ± 14.18 pg/mL) and U-II (174.80 ± 4.2 ng/mL) protein levels were significantly decreased in the MPA + TMQ group compared to the MPA group (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). There was a statistically positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the TGF-β1 and U-II protein levels in all groups (p = 0.002, rcontrol = 0.890; p = 0.02, rTMQ = 0.861; p = 0.024, rMPA+TMQ = 0.868) except for the MPA group (p < 0.03, rMedrol = -0.870). Conclusions: As far as we know, this is the first study to demonstrate the curative functions of TMQ on ON by causing a correlated decrease in the expression of U-II and TGF-β1 in the femoral heads of rats.

Orthodontic aligners are changing the practice of orthodontics. This system of orthodontic appliances is becoming the mainstay appliance of choice for orthodontic offices in many countries. Patient preferences and lifestyle needs have made this appliance the primary choice when seeking care. ⋯ These improvements now mean that an orthodontist can be better prepared to manage a larger number of orthodontic malocclusions. This paper aims to discuss some of the evolution of orthodontic aligners and to describe to orthodontists the fundamentals of aligner therapy. In addition, it will provide an evidence-based outcome to the existing treatment outcomes in the current literature.

Objectives: Olfactory dysfunction is a clinical sign that is important to detect with coexistent upper airway comorbidities in patients with asthma. This study aimed to investigate the etiology of olfactory dysfunction in patients with asthma and the relationship between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels. Materials and Methods: This study included 47 asthma patients who were evaluated for olfactory dysfunction at Hiroshima University Hospital between 2012 and 2020. ⋯ Conclusions: We found that ECRS was the predominant cause of olfactory dysfunction in patients with high FeNO levels, while NCRS was more common in those with low FeNO levels. The present study showed that both ECRS and NCRS are common etiologies of olfactory dysfunction in patients with asthma. Additionally, this study supports the link between upper and lower airway inflammation in patients with asthma complicated with olfactory dysfunction.
