Review Case Reports
Pneumorrhachis Secondary to a Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer with Pre-Sacral Abscess-Case Report and Review.
The occurrence of pneumorrhachis (PR), defined as the presence of air within the spinal canal, presents a complex clinical picture with diverse etiological factors. We report an exceedingly rare case of PR arising from locally advanced rectal cancer accompanied by a pre-sacral abscess. ⋯ The patient survived the acute phase of the disease through multiple surgical interventions and admission to the intensive care unit, but succumbed to cardiovascular complications three weeks later. We also offer a brief review of the literature concerning PR originating from the colorectal lumen.

Background and Objectives: The primary method for assessing pelvic floor defects is through physical examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a radiological technique that is useful for identifying the underlying defects of pelvic floor structures that require surgery. The primary aim of this study was to find correspondence between the clinical and radiological staging of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) before and after vaginal surgery. ⋯ Conclusions: MRI is an accurate and objective method for defining the stage of prolapse, but clinical evaluation alone is sufficient for staging prolapse before surgery and evaluating the result at follow-up. It is an accurate method for visualizing some pelvic structures that can be compromised because of pelvic organ prolapse. MRI showed that vaginal surgery does not affect continence mechanisms.

Background and Objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), cardiovascular diseases, and premature death. The study aims to assess CKD knowledge and predictive variables among the general public. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the general public in Al Medina Al-Munawara, Saudi Arabia, utilizing a 21-item questionnaire-based approach over a 4-month period from January 2023 to April 2023. ⋯ Conclusions: A significant proportion of respondents had poor knowledge about CKD. Several demographic factors were associated with CKD knowledge. Further research is needed to explore these knowledge disparities and develop targeted interventions to improve CKD knowledge among the general public.

Background and Objectives: Venous leg ulcers pose a significant medical problem worldwide. The complexity of the problem determines the need for further interdisciplinary activities that will improve the quality of life for treated patients. This study compared the quality of life of patients with venous leg ulcers who received local hyperbaric oxygen therapy or local ozone therapy procedures as part of comprehensive treatment. ⋯ In this group, 6 months after the end of the treatment, a statistically significantly higher result on the EQ-VAS scale was also obtained (73.09 ± 19.8 points vs. 68.03 ± 17.37 points, p = 0.043). However, in the SF-36 assessment performed 6 months after the end of treatment, better results-a statistically significantly lower value of the quality of life index-were recorded in the group of patients treated with local ozone therapy (103.13 ± 15.76 points vs. 109.89 ± 15.42 points, p < 0.015). Conclusions: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and local ozone therapy procedures have a beneficial effect on improving the quality of life of patients with venous leg ulcers.

Background and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to compare the short-term outcomes of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) with argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) in patients with glaucoma in a real-world setting. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted as a retrospective case-control study. The main outcome was the change in intraocular pressure (IOP) three months after laser surgery. ⋯ Only a few AEs were observed. Two patients in the ALT and one patient in the SLT group required trabeculectomy within 1 year after laser treatment due to IOP decompensation. Conclusions: In the present study, SLT was at least as effective as ALT with fewer AEs and a similar reduction in concomitant IOP-lowering medication.
