Background and Objectives: Serum vitamin levels, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and their association with depression is a complex issue that has been the subject of much research. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between vitamin A, B9, and E levels, cardiovascular risk factors, and depression in premenopausal and menopausal South Korean women. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used the 2016-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. ⋯ Conclusions: Depression is correlated with lower blood levels of vitamin A in premenopausal women. Vitamin B9 and E levels were not associated with depression independent of menopausal status. Depression is associated with obesity and diabetes mellitus in premenopausal women and with stroke and myocardial infarction in postmenopausal women.

Effect of Comprehensive and Integrative Medical Services on Patients with Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A Pilot Study.
Background and Objectives: Two types of medicinal systems are available in Korea: Western and oriental. These exist as separate services that independently provide medical care to patients. We determined the utility and benefits of compressive and integrated medical services (CIMS) comprising 12 sessions of acupuncture and healing programs over 6 weeks. ⋯ Conclusions: Patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis who mainly complain of radiating pain in the lower leg may benefit from CIMS after spinal nerve root block for ≤3 months after treatment. Our study findings suggest that this treatment improves spinal function and Oswestry Disability Index score. However, CIMS did not improve QoL.

Background and Objectives: In recent years, the prevalence of pediatric urolithiasis has increased in North America and Western countries, though it is endemic in developing countries. The aim of this study is to describe the experience of a tertiary pediatric referral center in the surgical management of pediatric urolithiasis. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the experience of patients ≤ 16 years old affected by urinary stones who underwent surgery. ⋯ The stone composition was evaluated in 25 cases. Conclusions: Numerous innovations in the surgical treatment of pediatric urolithiasis have resulted from the development of smaller devices and new technology. Our results show how, in experienced centers, retrograde and percutaneous lithotripsy are safe and effective procedures for use in pediatric populations.

Aggressive Male Breast Cancer-Clinical and Therapeutic Aspects Correlated with the Histopathological Examination: A Case Report and Literature Review.
Breast cancer is often seen as a disease that occurs in women, but it can also appear in men in a very small percentage, below 1%. Men have a minimal amount of breast tissue compared to women, which has the potential to become malignant in a similar way to women, although much less frequently. ⋯ Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations have an extremely important role in the pathology of breast cancer. Given that male breast cancer is rare and there are not enough surgeons specializing in breast surgery in our country, there is a lack of experience in the management and early diagnosis of this type of cancer, which will be highlighted in this article.

Background and Objectives: Dissecting the complex pathological cascade of an ischemic stroke in preclinical models is highly warranted to understand the course of this disease in humans. Neurogenesis and angiogenesis are integral for post-stroke recovery, yet it is not clear how these processes are altered months after an ischemic stroke. In this study, we investigated the changes that take place subacutely after focal cerebral ischemia in experimental adult male mice. ⋯ VEGF expression was diminished in both brain hemispheres of the fMCAo mice. Conclusions: Our current report shows that focal cerebral ischemia induces changes in neuroblast numbers and the pro-angiogenic factor VEGF in both cerebral hemispheres 2 months after an fMCAo in mice. Our data show that focal cerebral ischemia induces a long-term regenerative response in both brain hemispheres.
