Background. Defects of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) involved in the function of the mitochondrial electron transport chain can result in primary mitochondrial diseases (PMDs). Various features can influence the phenotypes of different PMDs, with relevant consequences on clinical presentation, including the presence of hearing impairment. ⋯ Conclusions. PMDs are challenging conditions with different clinical phenotypes. Hearing loss, especially when bilateral and progressive, may represent a red flag; its association with other systemic disorders (particularly neuromuscular, ocular, and endocrine) should alert clinicians, and confirmation via genetic testing is mandatory nowadays.

The traditional single-treatment strategy for cancer is frequently unsuccessful due to the complexity of cellular signaling. However, suppression of multiple targets is vital to defeat tumor cells. In this research, new compounds for the treatment of cancer were developed successfully as novel hybrid anticancer agents. ⋯ Anticancer activity was evaluated by performing cytotoxicity assays, kinase inhibition assays, cell cycle analysis, and BAX, Bcl-2, Caspase 3 and Caspase 9 protein level determination assays. The results showed that the designed hybrids tackled the cancer by inhibiting both cell proliferation and metastasis. A molecular docking study was performed to predict possible binding interactions in the active site of the investigated protein kinase enzymes.

Background and Objectives: Anastomoses of the extracranial and intracranial venous system have been described in the literature. The presence of such anastomoses may facilitate a possible spread of infection into the dural venous sinuses. However, the frequency and relevance of such anastomoses is highly debated. ⋯ Results: In 97% of cases, a dispersal of latex into the cavernous sinus as well as anastomoses was observed. A further dispersal of latex into other dural venous sinuses was found at rates ranging between 34% (transverse sinus)-88% (superior petrosal sinus), respectively. Conclusions: The presence of anastomoses between the extracranial and intracranial venous system in a majority of cases needs to be considered when dealing with pathologies as well as procedures in the facial region.

Background and Objectives: Early neonatal sepsis is associated with a significant mortality rate despite modern treatment strategies. Our aim was to identify risk factors contributing to the occurrence of death in newborns with early neonatal sepsis. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study that included newborns with early sepsis who received care in the intensive and semi-intensive care units at the Institute of Neonatology, Belgrade, Serbia. ⋯ Additionally, compared to newborns who survived, among the deceased neonates there was a significantly higher proportion of extremely preterm newborns (74.5% vs. 22.4%, p = 0.000). The following risk factors for the occurrence of death in early neonatal sepsis were identified: low birth weight, sepsis caused by gram-negative bacteria, and the use of double-inotropic therapy and erythrocyte transfusion during the first week. Conclusions: Pediatricians should pay special attention to infants with early neonatal sepsis in whom any of the identified risk factors are present in order to prevent a fatal outcome.

Minimally invasive dentistry is a considered process that requires the clinician to be prepared with the ideal sequence and the tools needed. This report describes a well-planned ultraconservative approach using only two ceramic laminate veneers for the maxillary central incisors to significantly improve the patient's overall smile. A 30-year-old female presented with the chief complaints of having diastemas between the central and lateral incisors as well as incisal wear. ⋯ Following proper planning and sequencing, predictable outcomes were obtained and fulfilled the patient's esthetic demands. Minimally invasive restorative dentistry with only two single veneers can impact the entire smile frame. Overtreatment in the esthetic zone is unnecessary to meet a patient's esthetic expectations.
