Background and Objectives: Ochradenus baccatus belongs to the family Resedaceae. It is widely spread in Saudi Arabia and other countries in Southwest Asia. O. baccatus is extensively used in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent, in addition to being a vital source of food for certain desert animal species. ⋯ Azelaic acid, β-amyrin, and phytanic acid are some of the bioactive compounds that were detected in the extracts via LC-MS, and they are thought to be responsible for the observed antibacterial/anticancer activity of O. baccatus methanolic extracts. Conclusions: This study confirmed the antibacterial/anticancer potential of O. baccatus methanolic extracts and analyzed their phytochemical constituents. Further isolation and biological screening are warranted to understand the therapeutic potential of O. baccatus.

Deep Learning Prediction of TERT Promoter Mutation Status in Thyroid Cancer Using Histologic Images.
Background and objectives: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutation, found in a subset of patients with thyroid cancer, is strongly associated with aggressive biologic behavior. Predicting TERT promoter mutation is thus necessary for the prognostic stratification of thyroid cancer patients. Materials and Methods: In this study, we evaluate TERT promoter mutation status in thyroid cancer through the deep learning approach using histologic images. ⋯ Results: Using the hue-saturation-value (HSV)-strong color transformation scheme, the overall experiment results show 99.9% sensitivity and 60% specificity (improvements of approximately 25% and 37%, respectively, compared to image normalization as a baseline model) in predicting TERT mutations. Conclusions: Highly sensitive screening for TERT promoter mutations is possible using histologic image analysis based on deep learning. This approach will help improve the classification of thyroid cancer patients according to the biologic behavior of tumors.

Background: Closure of the appendix stump is critical to avoid serious postoperative complications. There are a number of options, but the best one has not been identified yet. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of appendiceal stump closure using self-locking polymeric clips and endoloops. ⋯ Conclusions: Self-locking polymeric clips can be used for the safe and effective closure of an appendiceal stump. There were no significant differences in the postoperative time (30 days) or complication rates among patients in both (clips and loops) groups. Thus, this might be a technique to reduce expenses while maintaining good postoperative results after laparoscopic appendectomy.

Background and Objectives: This prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the onset and severity of pain and other complications following lower impacted third molar extraction and to identify potential risk predictors. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five patients were treated with at least one lower impacted third molar extraction. The primary outcome was the onset of post-operative pain, evaluated at 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 7 days. ⋯ The linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant association (p < 0.05) between the duration of oral surgery and VAS scores at 6 and 12 h. Finally, the binary logistic regression identified systemic disease, Pell and Gregory classification, duration of oral surgery, VAS at 6 and 12 h, trismus, and edema at 3 and 7 days as predictive factors of post-operative complications. Conclusions: Within their limits, the results of this study suggest that the onset of post-operative complications increases in proportion to the duration of the surgical procedure.

Background and Objectives: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions with an unpredictable course and a remitting-relapsing evolution. Fatigue is a frequent complaint in patients with IBD, affecting approximately half of the newly diagnosed patients with IBD. The aim of this study was to analyze fatigue in patients with IBD in remission. ⋯ Symptoms of anxiety and depression were detected in 37% and 21% of the patients, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, fatigue was significantly associated with lower HR-QoL (OR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.42-3.44, p < 0.001), symptoms of anxiety (OR 5.04, 95% CI: 1.20-21.22, p = 0.008), female sex (OR 3.32, 95% CI: 1.02-10.76, p = 0.04) and longer disease duration (OR 1.13, 95% CI: 1.01-1.27, p = 0.04). Conclusions: Fatigue is highly prevalent even in patients with inactive IBD and is correlated with lower HR-QoL and anxiety, as well as with clinical factors such as longer disease duration and female sex.
