Background and objectives: Bullous pemphigoid (BP), the most common subepidermal autoimmune skin blistering disease (AIBD) has an estimated annual incidence of 2.4 to 42.8 new cases per million in different populations, designating it an orphan disease. Characterized by disruption of the skin barrier combined with therapy-induced immunosuppression, BP could pose a risk for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI). Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare necrotizing skin and soft tissue infection, with a prevalence of 0.40 cases per 100,000 to 15.5 cases per 100,000 population, often associated with immunosuppression. ⋯ Results: A total of 13 studies were included, six case reports of BP complicated by NF with six retrospective studies and one randomized multicenter trial of SSTIs in BP patients. Conclusions: Loss of skin integrity, immunosuppressive therapy, and comorbidities commonly related to BP patients are risk factors for necrotizing fasciitis. Evidence of their significant correlation is emerging, and further studies are deemed necessary for the development of BP-specific diagnostic and treatment protocols.

Background and Objectives: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an autoimmune, mucocutaneous, oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD), which characteristically manifests with chronic, recalcitrant lesions, with frequent flare-ups and remissions. The precise etiopathogenesis of OLP is still debatable, although it is believed to be a T-cell-mediated disorder of an unidentified antigen. Despite the availability of various treatments, no cure for OLP exists due to its recalcitrant nature and idiopathic etiology. ⋯ Further, PRP therapy offers the added benefit of minimal adverse effects and recurrences. Conclusion: This systematic review suggests that PRP has significant therapeutic potential for treating OLP. However, further research with larger sample sizes is imperative to corroborate these findings.

Background and Objectives: Studies have suggested that, by applying certain nerve ultrasound scores, demyelinating and axonal polyneuropathies can be differentiated. In the current study, we investigated the utility of ultrasound pattern sub-score A (UPSA) and intra- and internerve cross-sectional area (CSA) variability in the diagnostic evaluation of demyelinating neuropathies. Materials and Methods: Nerve ultrasound was performed in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) and compared to patients with axonal neuropathies. ⋯ Using this cut-off, the performance of UPSA in differentiating CIDP from other neuropathies including AIDP was excellent (area under the curve of 0.943) with high sensitivity (89.3%), specificity (85.2%) and positive predictive value (73.5%). There were no significant differences in intra- and internerve CSA variability between the three groups. Conclusion: The UPSA ultrasound score was useful in distinguishing CIDP from other neuropathies compared to nerve CSA alone.

Background and Objectives: Pubic ramus fractures are common in compound pelvic injuries known to have an increased rate of morbidity and mortality along with recurrent and chronic pain, impeding a patient's quality of life. The current standard treatment of these fractures is percutaneous screw fixation due to its reduced risk of blood loss and shorter surgery times. However, this is an intricate surgical technique associated with high failure rates of up to 15%, related to implant failure and loss of reduction. ⋯ Materials and Methods: A type II superior pubic ramus fracture according to the Nakatani classification was created in 18 composite hemi-pelvises via a vertical osteotomy with an additional osteotomy in the inferior pubic ramus to isolate the testing of three SPRF fixation techniques performed in 6 semi-pelvises each using either (1) a novel ramus intramedullary splint, (2) a partially threaded ramus screw, or (3) a fully threaded ramus screw. Results: No significant differences were detected among the fixation techniques in terms of initial construct stiffness and number of cycles to failure, p ≥ 0.213. Conclusion: The novel ramus intramedullary splint can be used as an alternative option for treatment of pubic ramus fractures and has the potential to decrease the rate of implant failures due to its minimally invasive implantation procedure.

Depression is a highly prevalent emotional disorder characterized by persistent low mood, diminished interest, and loss of pleasure. The pathological causes of depression are associated with neuronal atrophy, synaptic loss, and neurotransmitter activity decline in the central nervous system (CNS) resulting from injuries, such as inflammatory responses. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, patients with depression often exhibit the liver qi stagnation syndrome type. ⋯ We scrutinized the active components of SNP with blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and speculated about the corresponding pharmacodynamic pathways relevant to depression treatment through intervening in the CNS. Therefore, this article can enhance our understanding of SNP's pharmacological mechanisms and formula construction for depression treatment. Moreover, a re-demonstration of this classic TCM prescription in the modern-science language is of great significance for future drug development and research.
