Observational Study
Hyposmia in COVID-19: Temporal Recovery of Smell: A Preliminary Study.
Background and Objectives: Hypo/anosmia is a characteristic symptom of COVID-19 infection. The aim of this study is to investigate the time of smell recovery and to identify a possible order of perception recovery of different odors in COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on not hospitalized COVID-19 patients, selected according to eligible criteria. ⋯ The most frequent odor recovery sequence was: (1) phenyl ethyl alcohol; (2) eucalyptol; (3) vanillin; and (4) eugenol. In COVID-19 patients, hypo/anosmia occurs more often in women and at a young age. Conclusions: This preliminary investigation highlighted novel data: there is a chronological order in perception recovery of different olfactory substances and, therefore, in the restoration of the various sensitive nerve pathways involved in the sense of smell.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate osteoporosis-related treatments and the overall anticancer drug treatment tendencies, with a focus on selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and aromatase inhibitors (AIs), in Korean patients with breast cancer from 2010 to 2019. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Patients with breast cancer (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision code: C50) as a principal diagnosis at least once from 2010 to 2019 were included. ⋯ Additionally, SERM and AIs were prescribed most frequently before and after the age of 55 years, respectively, regardless of the presence of treatment. Conclusions: This study found that osteoporosis-related treatment and patient age were associated with anticancer drug prescriptions. The present findings would help clinicians and researchers in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Background and Objectives: Chest radiography remains the most frequently used examination in emergency departments (ED) for the diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), despite its poor diagnostic accuracy compared with ultra-low-dose (ULD) chest computed tomography (CT). However, although ULD CT appears to be an attractive alternative to radiography, its organizational impact in ED remains unknown. Our objective was to compare the relevant timepoints in ED management of CT and chest radiography. ⋯ Results: Chest radiography was performed for 1476 patients (mean age: 76 years [63; 86]; 55% men) and ULD chest CT for 133 patients (mean age: 71 [57; 83]; 53% men). In the weighted population with OW, ULD chest CT did not significantly alter the ED LOS compared with chest radiography (11.7 to 12.2; MR 0.96 [0.85; 1.09]), although it did significantly reduce clinical decision time (6.9 and 9.5 h; MR 0.73 [0.59; 0.89]). Conclusion: There is real-life evidence that a strategy with ULD chest CT can be considered to be a relevant approach to replace chest radiography as part of the diagnostic workup for CAP in the ED without increasing ED LOS.

Background and Objectives: Muscle cramps are often observed in patients with liver diseases, especially advanced liver fibrosis. The exact prevalence of muscle cramps in outpatients with liver diseases in Japan is unknown. Patients and Methods: This study examined the prevalence of, and therapies for, muscle cramps in outpatients with liver diseases in Tokyo, Japan. ⋯ The prevalence of muscle cramps among patients with liver diseases seemed not to be higher. The problem was that only 11 (32.4%) of 34 outpatients received therapy for their muscle cramps. Conclusions: Only age is related to muscle cramps, which is rather weak, and it is possible that this common symptom may not be limited to liver disease patients.

We investigated whether the distribution of mechanoreceptors in three sections of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) differed. ⋯ The four types of mechanoreceptors were distributed differently among the three sections of the ATFL. Type I mechanoreceptors were more numerous in all sections compared to the other receptors.
