Observational Study
Diagnosis and Surgical Management of Insulinomas-A 23-Year Single-Center Experience.
Background and Objectives: Insulinoma is a rare tumor of the Langerhans islets of the pancreas. It produces insulin and causes severe hypoglycemia with neuroglycopenic symptoms. The incidence is low, at about 1-2 per 1 million inhabitants per year. ⋯ Conclusions: Surgery is the treatment of choice in the case of insulinomas. The enucleation of the tumor is a sufficient treatment for benign insulinomas, which are not in contact with the main pancreatic duct. Due to the low incidence of the condition, the centralization of patients is recommended.

Low-Level Laser Therapy for the Treatment of Oral Mucositis Induced by Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.
Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect induced by stem cell transplantation that is experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This condition involves inflammation and ulceration of the oral mucosa, leading to pain, difficulty with eating and speaking, and an increased risk of infections. Mucositis not only compromises the quality of life for cancer patients, but also affects treatment outcomes and may necessitate dose reductions or treatment delays. ⋯ I. 95%). Conclusions: The application of laser therapy results in decreased severity of oral mucositis from radiation and chemotherapy. Our study shows that the application of low-level laser therapy in the treatment of transplant mucositis has excellent efficacy in relieving the symptoms and severity of mucositis.

Background and Objectives: Granulomatous mastitis is a benign disease with a clinical presentation similar to that of breast cancer, and is most commonly observed in women of childbearing age. Although it has been suggested that autoimmune diseases are involved in its pathogenesis, no specific treatments have been established. The occurrence of this disease during pregnancy has rarely been reported. ⋯ Conclusions: This case suggests that incisional drainage and antibiotic therapy, as well as steroids and surgery, may be considered in the treatment of granulomatous mastitis occurring during pregnancy. This may also be true for management during delivery. After delivery, breastfeeding and steroidal therapy proved to be effective in treating the condition.

The study aimed to assess self-reported symptoms of periodontal disease (gingival bleeding, tooth mobility and halitosis) among diabetic and non-diabetic patients from Transylvania, Romania. Using statistical analysis methods, correlation between the aforementioned symptoms and diet, oral hygiene habits, stress, physical activity, and BMI (body mass index) were researched. Another secondary objective was to assess the impact of self-reported oral health, aesthetics, and halitosis on their life. ⋯ A total of 66% of the non-diabetics and 68% of the diabetics of the surveyed subjects consider a software application for generating awareness of oro-dental complications useful, and are willing to pay around EUR 6 for it. Conclusions: Having a medical condition such as diabetes makes patients pay more attention to dental health compared with non-diabetic patients. Patients expressed their desire to use a software application to help them to be aware of their condition and for improving their self-report capabilities, including their oral-health-related status.

Background and Objectives: The incidence of diabetic osteoporosis, an important complication of diabetes mellitus, is increasing gradually. This study investigated the combined effect of the Zuogui pill (ZGP) and eldecalcitol (ED-71), a novel vitamin D analog, on type 2 diabetic osteoporosis (T2DOP) and explored their action mechanism. Materials and Methods: Blood glucose levels were routinely monitored in db/db mice while inducing T2DOP. ⋯ The PI3K inhibitor LY294002 or AKT inhibitor ARQ092 altered the synergistic action of both on osteogenic differentiation. Conclusions: The combined use of ZGP and ED-71 reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic mice and promoted osteogenic differentiation through the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway, resulting in improved bone mass. Our study suggests that the abovementioned combination constitutes an effective treatment for T2DOP.
