Background and Objectives: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe affliction that can have a profound impact on a person's ability to move and feel, affecting a significant number of individuals. However, rehabilitation after SCI treatment remains a critical method to improve motor-sensory functions, which improves the patient's quality of life. This study aims to describe the epidemiological profile of SCI during the COVID-19 pandemic ("COVID-19 period") and before and after the COVID-19 pandemic ("non-COVID-19 period") in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. ⋯ Workers are the most vulnerable group to SCI among all patients. Prevention strategies should be customized based on the unique characteristics of SCI patients. This study highlights the importance of SCI rehabilitation.

Background and Objectives: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease, a tauopathy, which results in a wide clinical spectrum of neurological symptoms. The diagnosis is mostly based on clinical signs and neuroimaging; however, possible biomarkers for screening have been under investigation, and the role of the gut microbiome is unknown. The aim of our study was to identify potential blood biomarkers and observe variations in the gut microbiome within a PSP discordant monozygotic twin pair. ⋯ Using a microbiome analysis, we also discovered a relative dysbiosis, and the MRI results revealed midbrain and frontoparietal cortical atrophy along with a reduction in overall brain volumes and an increase in white matter lesions in the affected twin. Conclusions: We observed significant differences between the unaffected and affected twins in some risk factors and blood biomarkers, along with disparities in the gut microbiome. Additionally, we detected abnormalities in brain MRI results and alterations in cognitive functions.

Background and Objectives: A rigid, resorbable magnesium membrane was recently developed, combining the advantages of resorbable and non-resorbable membranes. Our aim was to describe the application of this membrane for guided bone regeneration (GBR). Materials and Methods: This case report described the treatment and 3D evaluation of two cases utilizing a resorbable magnesium barrier membrane. ⋯ No marginal peri-implant hard tissue loss could be detected at the two-year follow-up. Conclusions: The application of conventional resorbable collagen membranes would be difficult in either of the cases presented. However, the rigid structure of the magnesium membrane allowed for the limitations of conventional resorbable membranes to be overcome.

Background and Objectives: Bariatric surgery has been proposed as a treatment option for type 2 diabetes, but there is limited research on its efficacy and the use of standardized outcome measures. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of bariatric surgery in managing type 2 diabetes and to assess the BAROS protocol postoperatively. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Saudi Arabia, involving 346 bariatric surgery patients aged 18-60. ⋯ Conclusions: Bariatric surgery effectively manages type 2 diabetes with a high rate of EWL% and complete remission. The BAROS protocol is a valuable tool for assessing the quality of life postoperatively, with most participants achieving a "Moderate" to "Excellent" score. Comorbidities negatively impact the BAROS score, highlighting the importance of managing these conditions postoperatively.

Background and Objectives: Preoperative echocardiography is widely performed in patients undergoing major surgeries to evaluate cardiac functions and detect structural abnormalities. However, studies on the clinical usefulness of preoperative echocardiography in patients undergoing cerebral aneurysm clipping are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between preoperative echocardiographic parameters and the incidence of postoperative complications in patients undergoing clipping of unruptured intracranial aneurysms. ⋯ In multivariable logistic regression, the total amount of crystalloids infused (1.002 (1.001-1.003), p = 0.001) and E/e' ratio (1.17 (1.01-1.35), p = 0.031) were significant independent factors associated with the occurrence of a postoperative complication. Additionally, the maximal diameter of a cerebral aneurysm (1.13 (1.02-1.25), p = 0.024), total amount of crystalloids infused (1.001 (1.000-1.002), p = 0.031), E/A ratio (0.22 (0.05-0.95), p = 0.042), and E/e' ratio (1.16 (1.04-1.31), p = 0.011) were independent factors related to prolonged hospitalization. Conclusions: Echocardiographic parameters related to diastolic function might be associated with postoperative complications in patients undergoing clipping of unruptured intracranial aneurysms.
