Food and fluid supply is fundamental for optimal athletic performance but can also be a risk factor for caries, dental erosion, and periodontal diseases, which in turn can impair athletic performance. Many studies have reported a high prevalence of oral diseases in elite athletes, notably dental caries 20-84%, dental erosion 42-59%, gingivitis 58-77%, and periodontal disease 15-41%, caused by frequent consumption of sugars/carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fats, or deficient protein intake. ⋯ Overall, sports diet appropriately applied to deliver benefits for performance associated with oral hygiene requirements is necessary to ensure athletes' health. The overall aim is to help athletes, dentists, and nutritionists understand the tangled connections between sports diet, oral health, and oral healthcare to develop mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of dental diseases due to nutrition.

Background and Objectives: Local infiltration analgesia (LIA) represents a potential approach to reducing pain in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block also provides adequate analgesia for fractures and THA. As most hip surgeries use a lateral incision, affecting the cutaneous supply by branches of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), the LFCN block can contribute to postoperative analgesia. ⋯ Postoperative delirium incidence and the median abbreviated mental test scores were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: The combination of PENG and LFCN blocks may contribute to enhanced recovery for patients undergoing LIA after hip fracture surgery. However, further well-controlled research is necessary to determine the effectiveness of supplemental PENG combined with LFCN block in addressing cognitive deficits in these patients.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients suffering from chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and tissue loss treated with primary isolated femoral bifurcation endarterectomy (FBE) or with FBE combined with bypass surgery. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed in a tertiary university-based care centre. Between January 2008 and December 2019, a prospectively collected database of patients suffering from CLTI and tissue loss and undergoing either primary FBE (group A) or FBE in combination with bypass surgery (group B) was analysed. ⋯ Conclusions: FBE and FBE with bypass are equally effective for ulcer healing in cases of combined CFA and superficial femoral artery lesions. There was no significant difference between both groups regarding primary and secondary patency rates, limb salvage rates and ulcer healing. Isolated FBE could be an alternative strategy in patients with higher operative risk.

Background and Objectives: The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) goes beyond the consequences of the infectious disease, especially as the measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus have had a very profound impact on people's social relationships and everyday lives. Several studies have investigated these effects, but there is a lack of longitudinal studies in Central Europe. Objective: The aim of our study was to observe changes in well-being, loneliness, and suicidal behaviour before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the same population-based cohort. ⋯ No significant changes concerning suicidal ideation were observed. Conclusions: Our study suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way in which people perceive their well-being and especially their relationships with others. From the data, we can conclude that people's worldview is now lonelier than before the pandemic.

Background and Objectives: The interaction between thyroid and SARS-CoV-2 is complex and not yet fully understood. This study aimed to identify a predictive value of serum TSH levels on the short-term and middle-term outcomes of patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed electronic records (ERs) data for hospitalized COVID-19 patients between March 2020 and June 2021 and their ERs during outpatient visits, 6-8 weeks post-discharge, in cases of known serum TSH levels and no previous thyroid disorder. ⋯ Patients with low TSH during hospitalization more often had persistent lung involvement during the post-COVID-19 period (p = 0.028). In the post-COVID-19 period, there was an overall, statistically significant increase in the TSH levels when compared to TSH during hospitalization (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Low/suppressed serum TSH levels during acute COVID-19 may be an additional laboratory test that should be included in the prediction of unfavorable short- and middle-term outcomes.
