Background and Objectives: Paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare neuroendocrine extra-adrenal tumors that could be secreting mass. The symptoms are the typical triad of paroxysmal headache, hypertension and sweating, but could also be accompanied by symptoms involving multiple organs. Surgery is the gold standard treatment for both PGLs and pheochromocytomas (PHEOs). ⋯ Biochemical tests were performed on all patients. Conclusions: In this retrospective study, we discuss the multidisciplinary management in our institute of this rare disease, from its challenging diagnosis to the surgical strategy for PGLs. Laparoscopic surgery is the gold standard, but a tailored approach should be adopted for each patient.

Background and Objectives: Determining the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP) is the main goal in the early stage of AP. The aim of this study was to compare laboratory parameters and indices, including the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the neutrophil-creatinine index (NCI), at admission in order to predict the severity of AP. Materials and Methods: Data from 421 patients who were admitted with a diagnosis of AP were collected retrospectively. ⋯ The AUROC of the nomogram (0.891) was superior to the AUROCs of all the components of the nomogram except the NCI. Moreover, the NCI was the only parameter to distinguish MSAP from MAP (OR:1.119, 95% CI: 1.015-1.235, p = 0.023) and SAP from MSAP (OR:1.095, 95% CI: 1.031-1.162, p = 0.003). Conclusions: The present study enabled the identification of the neutrophil-creatinine index as a new prognostic tool for the assessment of AP severity at hospital admission.

Application of Salivary Alpha-1 Antitrypsin in the Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Pilot Study.
Background and Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which joints are gradually destroyed. Early diagnosis and treatment before joint deformation or destruction is important. The detection of novel RA biomarkers in saliva may facilitate early detection of RA before disease onset. ⋯ There was a positive mild-to-moderate accuracy (area under the curve: 0.57-0.85) of A1AT in saliva to diagnose RA. The cut-off level (ng/mL) of A1AT in saliva for detecting RA was 1689.0. Conclusions: The obtained data can promote the application of the measurements of A1AT in saliva to diagnose RA.

Background and Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with various non-motor symptoms, including minor hallucinations, comprising visual illusions and presence and passage hallucinations. Despite their occurrence, even in newly diagnosed PD patients, data regarding the prevalence and characteristics of minor hallucinations, visual illusions in particular, remain limited. The aim of this study was to address this knowledge gap by assessing the prevalence of minor hallucinations in PD patients, with a focus on visual illusions. ⋯ PD patients experiencing visual illusions were more likely to report presence hallucinations compared to patients without visual illusions (53.8% vs. 4.5%, p = 0.002); no significant differences in other clinical characteristics were found. Conclusions: Minor hallucinations are a common phenomenon among PD patients without dementia, with a higher prevalence than among healthy controls. Visual illusions are the most prevalent type of minor hallucinations, affecting more than a third of PD patients, with complex visual illusions, kinetopsia, and pelopsia being the most frequently reported types.

Background and Objectives: Despite advancements in detection and treatment, cervical cancer remains a significant health concern, particularly among young women of reproductive age. Limited data exists in the literature regarding fertility-sparing treatment (FST) of cervical cancers with tumor sizes greater than 2 cm. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the reproductive outcomes of women diagnosed with cervical cancer greater than 2 cm who underwent FST. ⋯ However, careful consideration is advised in interpreting these encouraging results, as they are subject to limitations, such as variability in study designs and potential biases. In addition, reproductive outcomes should be further cross-referenced with oncologic outcomes to clarify the potential risk-benefit ratio. It is critical to conduct further research using standardized approaches and larger participant groups to strengthen the validity of the conclusions drawn.
